2012 Volvo XC60 update on sale in Australia

The 2012 Volvo XC60 range has been upgraded with a new model naming structure, slightly higher prices and a number of new standard features.

The four core models remain the same: T5, 3.2, D5 and T6. Replacing the ‘Teknik package’ options are the Teknik model variants, which are priced $5000 above each core model.

For those after a sportier look and feel, the D5 and T6 models can be ordered in R-Design trim, which adds $8000 to the core model price and includes all the features of the Teknik variant as well as sports styling and an uprated chassis.

All models now come with a reversing camera as standard equipment. An automatic power tailgate is also fitted to all new 2012 model year vehicles.

The T5, 3.2 and D5 models score a high performance multimedia system with a DVD player and a seven-inch screen (up from five inches), while the T6 gets a Dolby Pro Logic II premium surround sound system with 12 speakers. Bluetooth audio streaming is now standard on all models.

Teknik models now get Blind Spot Information System (side mirror alert for the driver), satellite navigation, voice control for phone and navigation, and active bending lights, which follow the car’s steering path.

The R-Design enhancements carry over from the previous model. The exterior scores 18-inch alloy wheels, chrome tailpipes, unique bumpers and other trim highlights, while the interior is fitted with sports seats, R-Design steering wheel, sports pedals and gearshift lever and other enhancements.

The R-Design chassis is 15mm lower and features stiffer springs and anti-roll bars. Monotube dampers replace the standard rear twintube setup, while the rear damper bushings are also 20 per cent stiffer.

Optional across the range is Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist, Pedestrian Detection and Full Auto Brake. If a collision is imminent, the system will apply full braking force to stop the car. With Queue Assist, if you are driving in city traffic below 30km/h, you can press a button and the car will smoothly tail the vehicle in front without any pedal input.

The only mechanical upgrade to the range is a tweak to the D5 engine. The 2.4-litre twin-turbo diesel engine now produces 158kW of power and 440Nm of torque (up 7kW/20Nm). Despite the increases, fuel consumption is 10 per cent better, down to 6.9 litres/100km. CO2 emissions have fallen from 201g/km to 183g/km.

2012 Volvo XC60 manufacturer’s list prices (excluding government and dealer charges):

  • T5 – $54,990
  • T5 Teknik – $59,990
  • 3.2 – $$58,990
  • 3.2 Teknik – $63,990

  • D5 R-Design – $68,990
  • T6 – $67,990
