Audi to set up production facilities in North America
Audi has admitted it needs to expand its sales inventory in North America and has confirmed plans to set up a factory in the country to help fulfil market demand.
The new plant will not only build vehicles but also engine and transmission components for Audi and Volkswagen products. According to Audi CEO Rupert Stadler, the new factories are scheduled to go up in the next three years.
"It is totally clear that we need new production capacity in the US. The question only is, when," Mr Stadler said in a recent Automotive News report.
Audi has been an increasingly popular brand in the US market over the past year, and aims to keep the momentum going with plans to sell a new benchmark of 150,000 units by 2015. Last year the company set a personal record of 101,629 units. To reach the new goal and to fulfil market demands, Mr Stadler says inventory is becoming an issue.
"Our dealers currently ask for more cars than we can deliver. Our delivery times are still too high."
Audi has even larger goals on an international scale, with its 'Strategy 2020' plan. The plan hopes to see total global sales go from last year's effort of 1.1 million units to two million units by 2020. The new plants in America are expected to help achieve this goal.
