Jaguar at 2011 Goodwood Festival of Speed (gallery)

Jaguar was the key sponsor of this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed, an event every car lover must visit at least once in their life. The British company was celebrating the Jaguar E-type's 50th birthday, with a giant sculpture.

The 28 meter tall E-Type sculpture (which is made out of steel tubes) was designed by well-known sculptor Gerry Judah and took 10 days to install. It weighs an incredible 150 tonnes (equivalent to 122 Series 1 E-types) and required half a kilometre of steel tubes, each 1,200mm in diameter. Thankfully though, the steel was a gift from Tata Steel (owned by the same parent company as Jaguar).

In total the sculpture took four months of planning and engineering. The result was truly spectacular. The design process began in January and was followed by detailed engineering calculations and planning stages that lasted four months.

Mr Judah says that he didn't use an actual E-Type because “I would like to express the form of the car itself without any embellishments. Everyone recognises the E-type, the shape speaks for itself. You can’t compete with it, you can’t digress from it.”

There were plenty of other Jaguars at Goodwood this year, both new and old. Some notable mentions were the famous C and D-Types and the original XK120. It wouldn't be a Jaguar show without the C-X75 concept car, which was also at the event.
