Batman Live Batmobile designed by Gordon Murray
So, what does someone who has already designed and development the once-fastest car in the world do in his spare time? Designs a Batmobile of course. Gordon Murray, the guy behind the famously fast McLaren F1 of the Nineties, has just unveiled the latest version of the Batmobile.
Coming from someone who used gold-plating around an engine bay of a production car simply due to the superior heat reflecting properties of the expensive metal, his idea of a Batmobile was always going to be extravagant.
It starts out taking loads of inspiration from Formula One cars, with a low and sleek design and a sharp front end and huge rear wing. The body is made from something called 'breathable' carbon fibre, which is an idea of Murray's, and it has illuminated wheels. The car's means of propulsion is yet to be sorted, but Murray sees the car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and lithium-ion batteries.
It's not all enviro-savvy though. Murray says the car will have a ceramic afterburner as well, to ensure that Batman always turns up on time. And don't think this is all in the name of fiction, this is Gordon Murray we're talking about here, he doesn't believe in fiction. Murray says that in coming up with the design, he focused on the car being real. He says it
"could be a real car ... the car is based on Formula One aerodynamics and materials, but as I see them in 20 years' time"
The car will appear in an upcoming production called Batman Live, which will tour around the UK. The show starts on July 19 in Manchester.
