As a tribute to mark the 30th Anniversary of BMW's first, last, and only mid-engined sports car, BMW has showcased a modern interpretation of the iconic M1 at the Concorso d'Eleganza at Villa d'Este.
Despite its deceptively artificial hues and proportions, the M1 concept actually exists as a
rolling shell, purely as a design exercise to pay homage to the original M1.
The original M1 served as the platform with which BMW launched its iconic M-Series, which today remain as arguably the world's greatest race-bred saloons.
Built to compete against the Porsche 911 which dominated racing at the time, the M1 itself was a complete disaster as James May explains.
