Tesla Roadster S production to end in December
In a recent filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Tesla has announced it is ending production of the Tesla Roaster S fully electric sports car in December this year and will focus on the all-new Tesla Model X.
The Model X is said to "incorporate the functionality of a minivan with the consumer appeal of a sports-utility vehicle". The company says the technology progress made with the Roadster S will be passed on to the new Model X which, company CEO Elon Musk has said, will hit the market in 2014.
In the meantime, Tesla is confident it will survive on the remaining stock of Roadster models before the next car comes out from the company, the Tesla Model S, in 2012. Prototypes of the Model S sedan are already up and running. The filing revealed,
"We expect the Model S will be manufactured with an adaptable platform architecture upon which other future vehicles, including our Model X crossover, will be based."
Tesla will also release another 5.3 million shares of the company onto the market to help raise funds for the development of the new models.
So far, around 1650 examples of the Tesla Roadster S have been delivered to customers around the world. It will be remembered as one of the first pioneering fully electric sports cars available to the masses around the world.
