Infiniti, Red Bull Racing to collaborate on road car: report

Red Bull Racing and Infiniti could team up to manufacture a high performance production car, according to reports out of Europe.

The British-based race team and Nissan-owned Infiniti are currently tied together in a two-year sponsorship deal, with the Infiniti logo featuring prominently on the Formula 1 cars of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel.

Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner told reporters that his team’s engineers were capable of expanding their skills to road cars.

“There’s no reason not to be involved [in a collaboration],” Mr Horner said.

“We have proved that Red Bull can take on the likes of Mercedes in F1 despite their heritage, and a natural evolution of that would be to use our expertise we have in [developing] road cars.”

Nissan/Infiniti head of motorsport, Simon Sproule, was also supportive of a deepening of the Red Bull-Infiniti relationship.

“Our relationship with Red Bull is only five races old, but the trajectory for it is to move on and work more closely together. One way of doing that is on a road car project,” Mr Sproule told the UK’s WhatCar.

He said an Infiniti Red Bull edition could sit above the current benchmark Infiniti Performance Line, with a production car expected to be on sale within 18 to 24 months.

Nissan Australia has confirmed the Infiniti luxury sports brand will go on sale in Australia in 2012, with the FX crossover, G37 convertible and coupe and the M sedan to be among the first vehicles launched.

The news comes just days after Jaguar and Williams F1 announced that they were collaborating on the all-new C-X75 supercar.
