2012 Audi A6 Avant under consideration for Australia

The all-new 2012 Audi A6 Avant has been unveiled ahead of its international launch in the third quarter of the year.

The stunning estate is styled similarly to the A6 sedan, which was revealed last December.

But Australian fans of the A6 Avant shouldn’t get too attached to it, with Audi Australia’s Sean Poppit today admitting that the local arm had not yet confirmed the vehicle’s arrival.

Mr Poppit said Audi Australia still had to work through the business case for the wagon. He admitted Audi was unlikely to bring the Avant here if it believed it would not achieve an acceptable volume level.

He said Audi Australia was currently satisfied with the sales of the A6 Allroad quattro and said it should not be taken as a given that the introduction of the A6 Avant was a natural progression for the local brand.

Mr Poppit confirmed the launch of the A6 sedan range was still on track, with the vehicle to launch at the Australian International Motor Show in Melbourne in July before going on sale shortly after.

The A6 Avant will be available with a range of six direct-injection engines – two petrols and four diesels – and like in the sedan, fuel consumption has decreased by as much as 18 percent in some models.

Petrol options include a 2.8-litre V6 FSI with 150kW of power and 280Nm of torque, and the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI, which produces 220kW and 440Nm.

A 130kW/380Nm 2.0-litre TDI will be the most efficient engine in the range, promising to use just 5.0 litres/100km on the combined cycle and emitting 132g/km of CO2.

The 3.0-litre TDI will be available in three different tunes. The first produces 150kW and 400Nm. The second will be a clean diesel variant with 180kW and 500Nm that will arrive sometime after the launch. The final range-topping engine will be a twin-turbocharged performance variant with 221kW and 650Nm, capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 5.4 seconds.

Depending on the variant, the A6 Avant will be equipped with a six-speed manual, sporty seven-speed S tronic, a continuously variable multitronic or an eight-speed tiptronic transmission. Front-wheel drive will be standard while quattro all-wheel drive will be available as an option.

The A6 Avant has a luggage capacity of 565 litres, which can be increased to 1680 litres with the rears seats folded down.

Overall vehicle weight has dropped by up to 70kg thanks to widespread use of aluminium, which comprises 20 percent of the body.

As is always the way with Audi, a number of high-tech features will be available on the A6 Avant, although many will be optional.

These include adaptive air suspension, hard-drive navigation system, Bang & Olufsen advanced sound system, Audi connect with internet connection and Wi-Fi hotspot, online traffic information service, head-up display, adaptive headlights, front seats with ventilation and massage functions and full LED headlights.

The 2012 Audi A6 Avant will go on sale in Europe in the third quarter of this year, with prices starting from 40,850 euros ($54,750).
