BMW 3 Series GT spy shots

BMW has been caught testing the upcoming BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo. Like the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo, the 3 Series GT showcases a lower profile with a swooped roofline compared with the wagon.

Yes, filling out the next-generation 3 Series range will not only be a sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon, but also a low-slung wagon version called the GT. Whether or not there's a place in the market for such a 3 Series is perhaps another matter.

These images prove BMW is keen about the idea and is currently putting prototypes out on the street for testing. Although the car is covered in disorienting paintwork, the overall layout and profile of the car can be interpreted.

From the side, the rear end of the roof swoops noticeably down, providing a fastback C-pillar angle and rear windscreen. It also incorporates hatch functionality. It's unknown if the GT version will only offer two seats in the back, like the 5 Series GT, or three seats like a normal 3 Series.

The tip of the boot lid is noticeably higher than the sedan but also a lot lower than the wagon, much like the 5 Series GT. Also, the new 3er features a longer wheelbase compared with the sedan, a wheelbase that will also be shared with the upcoming wagon.

The spacecraft-esque circular taillights are likely to be an aspect of this particular prototype only, deterring onlookers from witnessing the actual taillight design.

As for engine packages, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is expected to offer the same offerings as the rest of the 3 Series lineup. This means it will get the new turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, as well as a range of six cylinder and diesel units.

Reports say the new 3 Series GT will hit the market about a year after the wagon version goes on sale, some time next year.
