2011 Volvo S60, XC60 recalled in Australia

Volvo Car Australia has issued two recalls for the 2011 Volvo S60 and XC60 models, with up to 77 vehicles affected locally.

The first recall affects S60 and XC60 vehicles equipped with the 2.0-litre T5 petrol engine.

The official recall notice published on the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) website explains a fuel supply line may be incorrectly manufactured and may lead to fuel leakage:

“The driver may notice a fuel smell. In a worst case scenario a fuel line connection may completely detach and the engine may stall without any prior warning due to no fuel supply. This may occur suddenly and without prior warning to the driver which poses an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.”

A total of 55 vehicles are affected by the recall in Australia. Volvo Car Australia’s Jaedene Hudson said the recall repair would take around two hours and involve replacing the ‘male and female’ fuel pipes.

The second recall includes the same two models and relates to the fuel pressure line and purge line connectors in the 2.0-litre T5 and 3.2-litre naturally aspirated six-cylinder engines.

The ACCC recall notice explains the two lines may have been switched during production.

“If the condition occurs, the pressure line will be missing an O-ring, which could lead to fuel seepage in sub-zero temperatures and the customer noticing a fuel smell.”

In total, 22 vehicles are affected by this recall in Australia. Vehicles will be checked by authorised Volvo dealers and the fuel bundle assembly underneath the car will be replaced if necessary, which will take about one hour.

Ms Hudson said it was possible that some vehicles could be affected by both production defects, but believed that 77 vehicles in total would be recalled in Australia.

She confirmed the defects were a global issue discovered by Volvo and no incidents had been reported anywhere around the world. Ms Hudson said solutions have now been implemented into the production process so no new cars will exhibit the defects.

Volvo Car Australia will contact all affected owners by mail, and owners are advised to contact their authorised Volvo dealer to organise the recall service.
