Peugeot EX1 Concept smashes Nurburgring EV lap record

The Peugeot EX1 Concept has broken the lap record for an electric car at the famous Nurburgring racetrack in Germany by a staggering 50 seconds.

French driver Stéphane Caillet piloted the low profile EV around the 20.8km Nurburring-Nordschleife circuit in 9:01.338, averaging 138.324km/h. According to Peugeot, the weather conditions were “unfavourable”, with the official images revealing a damp, overcast setting.

The EX1 Concept’s time smashed the previous record, a 9:51.45 set by the MINI E Race in 2010.

It may be a long way shy of super performance machines like the Porsche 911 GT2 RS (7:18) or the Nissan GT-R (7:24.22), but the Peugeot has a very different way of getting its power down.

Unveiled at the 2010 Paris Motor Show to celebrate the French marque’s 200th anniversary, the EX1 Concept is powered by two electric motors, one for each axle. Producing 250kW of power and 480Nm of torque in total, the EX1 is all-wheel drive, with a rear track considerably narrower than the front.

Teamed with its ultra-aerodynamic design and lightweight body (998kg), the EX1 Concept is capable of accelerating from 0-100km/h in just 3.6 seconds, which makes it quicker than a six-speed manual Porsche 911 Turbo.

Unfortunately, the Peugeot EX1 Concept is destined to remain just that, a concept, as Peugeot has no plans to launch a production version. That said, the expertise gained through its development will inspire the next generation of Peugeot vehicles, which is something we are definitely looking forward to.
