Scion FR-S Concept at New York show
Toyota's youth-inspired economy subsidiary, Scion, has unveiled its version of the popular and highly anticipated Toyota FT-86 concept called the Scion FR-S Concept. It features the same foundations as the Toyota only it is dressed in a sleeker bodykit, has revised wheels and enhanced highlights.
The Scion FR-S, meaning front-engine rear-wheel drive sports, gets a slightly restyled front end incorporating a more aggressive front bumper bar and tweaked headlights that include LED clusters. At the unveiling in New York, vice president of Scion, Jack Hollis, announced the car, saying,
"FR-S stands for Front-engine… Rear-wheel drive… Sport. Pretty simple. I personally believe it should stand for Friggin’ Really Sweet… but the legal department at Toyota was not feeling the same way."
From the back, the Scion FR-S is really impressive, it almost looks like a Ferrari, with its very aggressive rear splitter and diffuser arrangement cradling the rear end. Two exhaust outlets sneak out from either side of the splitter like a true sports car as well.
From the side, the FR-S looks equally exotic, showcasing a separate black splitter flowing along the sill and swooping rear haunches which blend in to the duck-tail-like boot lid.
The car is so highly detailed, from the 'Scion' engraved tyres to the 'SCION' cutout on the face of the boot lid, the FR-S has got to be one of the best looking coupes of the New York show so far?
As with the Toyota FT-86, definite engine specifications have been kept under tight wraps, however, the Scion production version will apparently come with the same 2.0-litre Subaru Boxer engine.
Scion has revealed that the engine will use Toyota's D4-S injection system though, which uses both direct and port fuel injection for greater power and torque.
The Scion FR-S is expected to go on sale in production form some time in 2012. In meantime take another look at the simply jaw-dropping Concept images above.
