2011 MG 6 on sale in UK from April 13

After more than 15 years absence from the automotive market, MG is set to return with the MG 6 fastback sedan in the UK on April 13. The car will be built at the company's original Longbridge factory in Birmingham and will only be sold, at least initially, in the UK.

The car that will try to kickstart the brand will be the MG 6 five-door fastback. And although the name fastback may imply a certain level of sportiness, the MG 6 will only be fast enough to achieve o-100km/h in 8.4 seconds. The performance, or lack of, is thanks to a 1.8-litre turbocharged petrol, producing a fairly lethargic 119kW of power and 215Nm of torque.

This puts it up against the Mazda3 and Ford Focus in terms of engine performance. Previous MG cars were predominately marketed as sports cars, but with the return of the company under its new owners - Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) Group - the brand will be aiming for a more conservative approach, entering the market with a range of normal, everyday models.

Handling performance isn't likely to be its strong suit either, as the MG 6 is built on the same platform as China's Roewe 550 - a car that is actually based on MG's old RD/X60 platform which once underpinned the Rover 75.

The interior of the MG 6 takes on a neat, sporty and moderately luxurious approach, tastefully upholstered in leather and incorporating a light smattering of techno-savvy gizmos including sat-nav. Soon after the introduction of the MG 6, a sedan version will follow, likely around mid-year.

Three trim levels will be offered: the entry-level £15,495 ($24,114) MG6 S, the £16,995 ($26,448) MG6 SE, and a top-shelf £18,995 ($29,560) MG6 TSE.
