BMW TwinPower technology for future three-cylinder engines

BMW is officially developing TwinPower turbocharging technology for a new range of three- and four-cylinder engines. The TwinPower system will also be utilised in both petrol and diesel forms.

We reported a couple of months ago that BMW was thinking of developing a four-cylinder TwinPower turbo engine to be used on the upcoming BMW Z4, but now it seems the company is very keen on taking the TwinPower technology well into the future and incorporating it into a number of its smaller models.

BMW revealed a BMW X1 SUV which showcased a 2.0-litre TwinPower motor earlier this month at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. The technology combines direct-injection, variable Valvetronic valve timing, and the twin-scroll turbocharger unit, to maximise fuel and power efficiency. The engine showcased specifications of 180kW and 350Nm. More importantly though, it offered a fuel consumption rating of just 7.9L/100km.

BMW has now said it will be introducing the technology on a number of other small cars in the future to help reduce its overall manufacturer's fuel consumption and emission outputs. The company already reduced its consumption and emission figures by 30 percent during 1995 and 2010, it now wants to cut them by a further 25 percent.

Last year, BMW Group sales in Europe averaged 148gm CO2/km, 6.6L/100km for petrol cars and 5.4L/100km for diesels.
