2011 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet production begins
Production of the 2011 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet has commenced at the German manufacturer’s new facility in Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, ahead of its Australian launch in the fourth quarter of 2011.
The Golf Cabrio is the first vehicle to be produced at the Osnabrück plant, and Volkswagen AG Chairman Martin Winterkorn said it has been the result of 12 months of development work.
“The team in Osnabrück has successfully managed the Golf Cabriolet start-up within the space of a year,” Dr Winterkorn said.
“The biggest compliment I can pay you today is that this car, your car, is a genuine Volkswagen. Osnabrück has made a masterful debut with the Golf Cabriolet.”
The soft-top Golf Cabrio will be sold in Australia alongside the New Beetle Cabrio and the hard-top Eos model. Drivetrains and specifications are expected to closely match those offered in the Golf hatch range, with European engine options ranging from 77kW to 155kW.
The Osnabrück plant covers the entire automotive process chain, from vehicle development to tooling and production.
There are currently 1250 people employed at the plant and that will expand to 1800 before the end of the year. By the end of 2011, Volkswagen will have invested approximately 300 million euros ($426 million) into the site.
Osnabrück has also been planned as an overflow facility for future Porsche Boxster and Cayman models.
The plant has a total production capacity of around 100,000 vehicles per year.
