2012 Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG coupe coming to Australia

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG coupe has been revealed in detail ahead of its official unveiling at next month’s 2011 New York International Auto Show.

The C 63 AMG coupe will be launched in Australia in September alongside the C 63 AMG sedan and estate variants. The standard C-Class coupe will arrive in Australia in July, a few weeks after the standard sedan and estate in June.

Mercedes-Benz Australia’s Jerry Stamoulis told CarAdvice the C 63 AMG coupe would effectively be a two-door version of the C 63 AMG sedan, although he revealed the coupe would be more “track-inspired” with a revised suspension set-up.

The 2012 Mercedes C 63 AMG is powered by a 6.3-litre V8 with 336kW and 600Nm of torque. The coupe accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 4.5 seconds and is electronically limited to a top speed of 250km/h.

Teamed with a seven-speed AMG Speedshift MCT automatic transmission, the coupe burns through fuel at a rate of 12.0 litres/100km and emits 280g/km CO2.

When the AMG performance package is optioned, the engine produces an extra 22kW – taking the total output to 358kW. Torque is unchanged, as are consumption and emissions figures, but the sprint from 0-100km/h comes up in 4.4 seconds – one-tenth quicker than the standard C 63 AMG coupe.

The AMG performance package includes forged pistons, connecting rods and the lightweight crankshaft from the SLS AMG, which lead to a three-kilogram reduction in total engine weight.

The enhanced variant also scores a titanium grey variable intake manifold under the bonnet, a high-performance AMG braking system with composite front discs and red brake calipers all round, carbon fibre boot-lip spoiler and an AMG performance steering wheel with nappa leather and Alcantara grip.

The C 63 AMG coupe features a separate three-link front suspension and a reinforced multi-link independent rear suspension set-up. The spring and damper rates have been optimised for responsiveness and reduced tyre and road noise. Adjustments have also been made to the kinematics and anti-roll bars, resulting in greater lateral acceleration and higher agility.

The transmission has three settings – S, S+ and M – as does the electronic stability control – ESP On, ESP Sport, ESP Off – all designed to enhance the vehicle’s personalised drive characteristics.

Inside, the C 63 AMG coupe features the flat-top and -bottomed steering wheel from the CLS 63 AMG with perforated leather and aluminium shift paddles. The seats are upholstered in a new breathable man-made fibre called ‘Dinamica’, and there is room for two passengers in the back.

The dashboard features Mercedes’ next-generation telematics system with larger displays, phone book transfer, SMS display, Bluetooth music streaming and USB connectivity.

The COMAND Online multimedia system incorporates internet access for the first time, allowing passengers to browse freely when the car is stationary. The navigation and mapping system has also been upgraded with 3D functionality.

The coupe comes with seven standard airbags, Attention Assist drowsiness detector, Headlamp Assist and cruise control with Speedtronic variable speed control.

Optional safety features include Active Lane Keeping and Bind Spot Assist, Distronic Plus proximity control, Parktronic, Pre-Safe and Pre-Safe Brake, Adaptive Highbeam Assist and Intelligent Light Systems.

The 2012 Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG coupe will make its world premiere at the 2011 New York International Auto Show on April 22 ahead of its overseas launch in July.
