Volvo C30 DRIVe Polestar prepares for World Touring Car Championship

Polestar Racing, with help from Volvo Cars, is about to launch the Volvo C30 DRIVe Polestar racing car at the first round of the World Touring Car Championships in Curitiba, Brazil. Polestar and Volvo will test the car to see if it is worthy of entering next year's full 2012 season.

Polestar Racing has raced the car at various Swedish events including the Scandinavian Touring Car Championships with some success. The company is now ready to test the car against the big guns in the WTCC. If the car does well, it will be the test-bed for a full 2012 season race model.

The Polestar Racing Volvo C30 DRIVe will feature a 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, producing 254kW of power at 6000rpm and 450Nm of torque, available from 5000rpm. However, the company will initially enter the car using a 2.0-litre engine for the first few rounds.

Christian Dahl, Managing Director of Polestar Racing, recently announced the car, saying,

"Volvo Cars has given us a sound mission to evaluate the championship, meaning that we are initially not focusing on results but rather on preparing a base that we could build upon for 2012."

Robert Dahlgren, the opening driver for the car, also said,

"I am very much looking forward to the season start. The first race of the year is by no means going to be easy, especially with the high level of competition and the fact that we are new to the championship. But we have got a solid programme and we are ready."

The C30 features obvious FIA-approved racing modifications, such as a full race roll cage, Performance Friction four-piston front calipers with 332 by 32mm discs and Alcon two-piston rear calipers clamping 290 by 10mm discs, and a comprehensive Ohlins adjustable suspension system.

It should be a very interesting car for the series, and if it goes well, we should expect to see a lot more of Volvo and Polestar Racing in the WTCC in the future.
