Fiat 500 Zagato Coupe has potential for production: report

The Fiat 500 Zagato Coupe that made a sparkling debut at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show could go into production, according to reports out of Mexico.

Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne told Spanish Autoblog that the 500 Zagato Coupe was under consideration to be manufactured in Mexico, as well as in small numbers in Europe.

The standard Fiat 500 has been produced at the Italian marque’s Toluca Car Assembly plant since 2010 alongside the Dodge Journey.

Mr Marchionne confirmed the Abarth 500 and the Fiat 500EV would go into production in Mexico by 2012, and said there would be room for the 500 Zagato Coupe if Fiat decided to build it.

The Geneva concept featured the traditional Zagato double-bubble roof that tapered down to form a classic coupe curve. The overall dimensions of the vehicle remain similar, although headroom for the two back seat passengers is likely to be somewhat reduced.

Under the bonnet is Fiat’s TwinAir two-cylinder engine, producing 78kW of power and 155Nm of torque, and emitting just 95g/km CO2 on the combined cycle.

Other highlights include the 17-inch alloy wheels and an interior combining dark diamond-stitched leather and yellow chamois details.

Production of the Fiat 500 Zagato Coupe is still to be confirmed. We’ll keep you posted on any developments as they emerge.
