Mini Rocketman Concept to go into production: report
According to a recent Autocar report in the UK, Mini has hinted the possibility that the Mini Rocketman Concept car recently unveiled at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show could be a showroom model in the future.
Apparently, Mini is very interested in creating a mini Mini and will take much of the Mini Rocketman design as inspiration for the upcoming, entry-level model. Ian Robertson, BMW sales and marketing boss, recently told Autocar that most Mini concepts do eventually end up going into production. Robertson said, "we are good at looking at history and interpreting a future for it."
The car features a number of innovative touches such as double-hinged doors for easier access, single-seat second row and a retractable boot floor, but above all, the Mini Rocketman Concept is quite a lot smaller in dimensions that the current Mini Cooper two-door range. Robertson said the compact shape will influence Mini models of the future. However, Robertson also said,
"The themes in the car are not just about a smaller Mini. Lightweight construction, and new types of components will go on to Minis. The BMW i-concept [lightweight and alternative energy] will be available to all members of the group.”
So what about the standard original Mini? Robertson said that even though new models and variants are being introduced, the core tw0-door Mini Cooper will always remain as the central hub of the range.
