2012 Gumpert Tornante unveiled at Geneva

The 2012 Gumpert Tornante was among one of the last vehicles to be unveiled on the opening day of the Geneva Motor Show, but it was definitely worth the wait.

Styled by Italian design house Touring Superleggera, the Tornante is significantly easier on the eye than its predecessor, the Gumpert Apollo.

While still far from ‘pretty’, the Tornante (which is Italian for ‘hairpin bend’) is certainly a captivating design, and one that is hard to look away from.

The collaboration between Gumpert and Touring was intended to bring elegance, ergonomics and comfort to the two-seater coupe that already packed efficiency, performance and driving pleasure.

The two came with one common philosophy: to remove all non-essential components, hence the clean and balanced proportions of the final design.

The Tornante features composite body panels over a light chrome-molybdenum steel space frame with carbon fibre monocoque, with a focus on lightweight construction and torsional stiffness.

Under the bonnet, the Tornante inherits much of the technology from the Apollo, including the 4.2-litre bi-turbo V8 engine and the six-speed sequential TT40e transmission.

The base model Tornante will produce 522kW of power, and a mysterous “alternative powered Tornante” planned for 2012 promises to take performance to another level again.
