2011 Jaguar XKR-S unveiled at Geneva

The 2011 Jaguar XKR-S, the fastest and most powerful production car Jaguar has ever built, has been unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show.

The famous British marque has confirmed international order books will open in September, with an on-the-road price in the UK expected to come in around £97,000 ($155,800).

Last week, Jaguar Australia all but confirmed the range-topping XKR-S would arrive in Australia, admitting that it was on the top of the local arm’s wish list.

Given that the standard XKR Coupe starts at $255,000 in Australia, we’d suggest not to expect too much change from $300,000 once the XKR-S hits local showrooms.

Jaguar released many of the details of the XKR-S in the lead up to the Geneva Motor Show, but they’re well worth a recap.

Its top speed of 300km/h makes it the first big cat to reach that speed milestone. The 5.0-litre supercharged AJ-V8 Gen III R direct-injection engine produces 405kW of power and 680Nm of torque, leading to a 0-100km/h sprint of 4.4 seconds. Like the rest of the XK range, a six-speed automatic transmission sends power to the rear wheels.

Jaguar Cars design director, Ian Callum, said the XKR-S was styled with speed in mind.

“The styling of this car isn’t about image, it’s about true performance,” Mr Callum said.

“Like other iconic Jaguars before it, the styling has been driven by geometry and aerodynamics for genuine design purity. The physics required to achieve 300km/h have led the aesthetic.

“If you don’t like the way it looks, you probably won’t like the way it drives either.”

As a result, the front bumper has been significantly redesigned with oval air intakes, a new carbon fibre splitter and a lower spoiler. Vertical intakes channel air down the side of the car and along the wider sills for increased high-speed stability.

To balance front and rear lift, the XKR-S features a separate rear wing, a first for the XK range. The carbon fibre centre section of the wing works in tandem with the Venturi structure underneath the rear bumper. Overall, lift has been reduced by 26 percent across the whole car.

The XKR-S will be available in five colours, including two that evoke Jaguar’s racing heritage: Italian Racing Red and French Racing Blue (pictured).

Inside, the fun starts with a red starter button that pulses like a heartbeat, and when pushed the Jaguar Drive Selector rises from the centre console to truly start proceedings.

The interior is a dark place, finished in ebony and black-gloss surfaces and black leather. Aluminium and wood veneers will also be available as options to lighten the mood.

The front seats are 16-way adjustable with heating and memory settings and are exclusive to the XKR-S.

Those thinking the hottest-ever big cat will be a serious Polar Bear killer should be pleasantly surprised too, with the XKR-S returning combined cycle fuel consumption figures of 12.3 litres/100km and CO2 emissions of 292g/km – making it one of the more environmentally friendly supercars on the market.

CarAdvice will provide more details on specifications and pricing closer to the launch of the Jaguar XKR-S in Australia.
