Wiesmann Spyder design study unveiled at Geneva

German track-day specialist Wiesmann has unveiled its latest design study – the Wiesmann Spyder – at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show.

If you have instantly fallen in love with the looks of the Spyder, we have some bad news for you (other than that you may have a serious undiagnosed visual impairment).

Wiesmann says it has not yet decided whether it will put the Spyder into production. Even if it was given the tick of approval tomorrow, apparently it would still be 2013 before the first hand-made production examples rolled out of the Dulmen workshop.

The two-seater convertible Spyder certainly has straight-line potential according to the early performance figures. A 313kW V8 engine sits in the front/middle, and overall weight is kept below 1000kg by leaving off doors and a windscreen.

As a result, acceleration from 0-100km/h takes less than four seconds and the Spyder will continue all the way to its top speed of approximately 290km/h.

The Wiesmann brothers (Martin and Friedhelm) explain that the Spyder is based on their earlier designs, and draws on both their 16 years of sports car manufacturing experience as well as the requests of customers for them to make a deeply purist model.

The pedigree and potential is there for the Wiesmann Spyder to be something special. We’ll follow its progress closely and keep you posted as we hear more.
