BMW Vision ConnectedDrive concept at Geneva

BMW has revealed the first official pictures of the latest concept in its Vision range of technological masterpieces – the BMW Vision ConnectedDrive – ahead of its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1.

CarAdvice revealed late last month that the Vision ConnectedDrive concept has been designed not to preview a production vehicle, but rather showcase the Bavarians’ advancements in driver assistance systems and vehicle mobility services.

BMW says the design study demonstrates current and future methods of mobile networking, and says the technology within the roadster is designed to make the vehicle an integral part of the networked world.

The comfort, safety and infotainment systems within the Vision ConnectedDrive can be optimised and individualised to suit the requirements of both the driver and the passenger.

Sensors in the headlights and taillights monitor the traffic and the environment, while antennas in the wing mirrors capture navigation data and transmit information to other road users.

A three-dimensional head-up display provides an optical fusion of the actual view of the road ahead with virtual content. Information is displayed either in the foreground or the background, depending on its relevance to the current traffic situation.

The passenger can become involved in the ConnectedDrive experience as well, acting as co-pilot in a navigation capacity. Information and address details sourced online by the passenger can be forwarded to the driver’s instrument panel to assist with directions.

The Emotional Browser function is also designed to make each trip an individual experience. While on the road, the system captures information about the environment, the driver and passenger, the mood and the location and adjusts various vehicle settings to suit the current driving situation.

Those hoping for more than a super iPhone on wheels will not be left wanting either, with BMW confirming a key component of the concept is “driving pleasure”.

Based on the Vision EfficientDynamics sports car, which has been confirmed for production, the Vision ConnectedDrive is fully electric.

The long bonnet blends seamlessly with the almost horizontal windscreen that pushes the seats right to the back of the roadster. Thin lights flowing along the sharp panels also add to the expressive design of the ConnectedDrive.

BMW will reveal the Vision ConnectedDrive concept alongside the ActiveE electric test vehicle and a range of new EfficientDynamics engines and technologies for its current vehicle range in Geneva on March 1.
