The turbocharged Golf R snatched the ‘Hot Hatch of the Year’ trophy at the TopGear Awards due to its all round talent and versatility. All three judges declared the top Golf the winner in this highly competitive category when they found the car to be
‘extraordinarily good at so many things’
Collecting the award for Volkswagen was Dr. Hendrik Muth, Head of Marketing and Communications at Volkswagen R – the company’s special vehicles wing that creates the ‘R’ cars.
Dr. Muth responded:
‘This is the third generation of the Golf R and the fastest yet; we designed it to appeal to keen drivers exactly like the judges at Top Gear’
The Golf R is the next step up from the Golf GTI and is powered by a four-cylinder 2.0-litre direct injection turbocharged engine, which develops 188 kW and 330 Nm of torque (Australian spec) and sprints from 0-100km/h is 5.7 seconds with a six-speed DSG transmission.
In keeping with the extra performance, the Golf R gets upgraded springs, dampers, braking system, as well as sportier gearbox mapping and more aggressive styling to distinguish it from the GTI.
Volkswagen is on a bit of a run with hot hatch awards, as the Golf R takes the 2010 crown from its performance sibling, the GTI that won in 2009.
