Toyota Australia warns of SMS, email scams

Toyota Australia is warning members of the public that it has no connection to a series of recent SMS and email messages purporting to come from the brand’s promotions department.

Toyota Australia has received hundreds of enquiries from people who have received messages claiming that they had won money or a new Toyota vehicle.

Recent examples include emails alleging to come from the ‘Toyota Flood Relief Fund’, ‘Toyota Car Promotions’, Toyota Car international Promotion Program’, ‘Toyota International Lotto’ and ‘Toyota Fortune Lotto Draw’.

Toyota Australia executive director of corporate services, Bernie O’Conner, said Toyota Australia and its related companies had no connection with any lotteries like the ones mentioned in the text and email messages.

“Any SMS or email of this nature has not been sent by Toyota Australia or by an external party with our permission,” said Mr O'Connor.

“Members of the public should avoid responding to any such email or providing any personal information or money, as any SMS or email using the Toyota name and claiming to award a lottery prize is highly likely to be a scam.”

Toyota suggests people looking for more information about recognising and reporting scams should visit the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s SCAMwatch website. Similar information about spam can be found on the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s website.
