Mercedes-Benz plans hybrid variant for entire range by 2014

Mercedes-Benz is very keen on having a hybrid version of every model in the company's lineup by 2014, with a C-Class and E-Class hybrid by 2013 and then an S-Class hybrid by 2014.

In a recent Automotive News report, Herbert Kohler, head of Daimler's E-Drive and Future Mobility division, spoke about how the company is dedicated to bringing hybrid technology forward at a faster rate, and is aiming to have a hybrid version of every model on the market by 2014. He said the company is already contributing $2.8 billion (half of its budget) towards alternative power technology.

In the US, a Mercedes-Benz M-Class is already available in full hybrid form while the S400 is also available as a semi-hybrid - the electric motor is unable to drive the wheels alone and is used like a stop/start system. A company source has said it will be introducing a plug-in hybrid version of the S-Class, which should be on the market by 2014.

There's already a Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-Cell full-electric car well into development stages, with a number of examples getting around parts of Germany. Even the company's sports car subsidiary, AMG, is planning on bringing hybrid versions to its range.

These models will be introduced as a part of the company's plans to be well prepared for ever-tightening emissions standards set by future EPA and Euro regulations.
