2011 BMW 5 Series Touring arrives in Australia

The first examples of the 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring luxury estate have arrived in Australian showrooms.

Available at two vastly different specification levels and price points, the fourth-generation 5 Series Touring range includes the entry-level BMW 520d Touring at $92,800 and the BMW 535i Touring, which is priced from $138,900.

Compared with the 520d and 535i sedan variants, the Touring versions demand a $9500 and $10,000 respective price premium.

Like the sedan, the 520d is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine with 135kW of power and 380Nm of torque. With an overall kerb weight of 1715kg (90kg more than the sedan), its combined cycle fuel consumption is just 5.3 litres/100km (CO2 emissions 139g/km). Acceleration from 0-100km/h takes 8.3 seconds – two-tenths more than the sedan.

The 535i Touring features a 225kW/400Nm inline six-cylinder engine. Weighing just 70kg more than the sedan (1770kg), acceleration from 0-100km/h and top speed are unchanged at 6.1 seconds and 250km/h respectively. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 8.5 litres/100km (CO2 emissions 197g/km).

The tidy fuel figures are courtesy of BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology, with both vehicles benefitting from active air vent control, electric power steering and brake energy regeneration.

The Touring’s boot capacity is 40 litres larger than the sedan at 560 litres, and expands to 1670 litres with the 40/20/40 split-fold rear seat folded down.

Most other dimensions are identical, although, despite the sedan being slightly taller than the Touring, there is 20mm more headroom for the rear seat passengers in the longer roofed variant.

Both variants are equipped with dual-zone climate control, leather upholstery, keyless start, front and rear fog lights, automatic headlights and windscreen wipers, Bluetooth connectivity, seven-inch display screen incorporating Navigation Business system and Professional audio system, single CD player, AUX/USB ports with iPod connectivity and iDrive controller.

Also standard is cruise control with braking function, head-up display, front and rear park distance control, rear view camera and parking assistant.

The 535i Touring adds adaptive bi-xenon headlights with high-beam assist, rear window sunblinds, 12-speaker audio system, sports steering wheel with gearshift paddles, 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic tailgate, ambient lighting and an enhanced two-zone air-conditioning system.
