Video: Hot Wheels Video Racer launched in the US

Tell me what eight-year-old boy, or 38-year-old boy for that matter, wouldn’t get a kick out of this.

Mattel has revealed the Hot Wheels Video Racer at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, demonstrating that the model car has come a long way since its humble beginnings.

The name gives it away really; it’s a toy car with a built-in video camera and LCD screen.

Recording sound and video at 30 to 60 frames per second, the Video Racer can store 12 minutes of racing footage and has a USB port that allows you to connect it to your computer.

For $US60, the car comes with simple editing software, a case and a strap to allow you to fasten it to whatever takes your fancy – most likely the fastest thing you can find.

Mattel says it hopes the Video Racer will encourage more kids to play outside (before rushing back in to hook it up to the computer, of course), and will make them feel like they are actually driving the car.

The Hot Wheels Video Racer goes on sale in the US next month, just in time to replace all those broken Christmas presents from last year.
