1997 McLaren F1 GTR long-tail for sale as last remaining example: $4M

Investing in cars with the sole purpose of making some sort of profit in the end is generally regarded as a bad idea, unless, of course, the car in question is something really special. Something that is perhaps one of only 100 in the world. If you can find something that is the only one left in the world though, our advice is: Buy it.

If you can. Here is a perfect example. It's a McLaren first of all, and anything with the 'McLaren' name attached to it is almost always number XX of XX in the world. This is the last standing example of the awesome McLaren F1 GTR race cars. Just 28 of them were ever made, only 10 of them being the long-tail version.

It's a 1997 edition with the original Gulf sponsor markings all over it; possibly one of the most desirable cars available today. It has raced in various GTC races and designed to race at Le Mans in France. This version has been restored somewhat and features an interior, engine bay and exterior that is as good as new.

Under the engine cover lies the awesome 6.0-litre BMW M V12 engine, like the one the McLaren F1 road car gets. The rest of the car is completely race-focused though, with a number of reinforcing revisions, including a stronger X-trac six-speed sequential gearbox and that elegant long-tail (and nose) body which was developed purely in the pursuit of speed. The engine is revised to meet FIA regulations too, and produces around 450kW with the induction restrictor in place.

If you've got a spare $4 million lying around, our advice is to head over to Japan and buy this. It will make you an even richer person one day. And you'll never get tired of telling your mates about it.
