2017 Volvo V90 unveiled, Australian launch due early next year

The new 2017 Volvo V90 wagon has been unveiled ahead of its official debut at the Geneva motor show in a few weeks time.

Today's reveal puts an end to the near constant trickle of leaks, which stretches back as far as October 2015 when photos of scale models of the car popped up in China. The new wagon revives the V90 name that was retired back in 1998.

Unlike that wagon, which featured inline six-cylinder engines and rear-wheel drive, the new V90 shares its front- and all-wheel drive platform, known as the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), with the S90 sedan and XC90 SUV.

As such, it will be powered exclusively by a range of boosted and assisted 2.0-litre four-cylinder engines.

Initially, the V90's petrol lineup will include the front-wheel drive T5 with a turbocharged 187kW/350Nm motor, the all-wheel drive T6 with its twin-charged 235kW/400Nm engine, and the all-wheel drive twin-charged plug-in hybrid T8 with a total system output of 300kW/640Nm.

Also available will be the 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel in 140kW/400Nm D4 and 173kW/480Nm D5 AWD trims.

Depending on the drivetrain, the V90 weighs between 1825 and 2100 kilograms.

The new V90 measures 4936mm long, 1890mm wide, 1475mm tall and sits on a 2941mm wheelbase. This means that the wagon is 27mm shorter, but stands 32mm taller than the S90 sedan.

As you'd expect from a large Volvo, the V90 features all of the company's newest safety gear, including the Pilot Assist II system that allows for semi-autonomous driving on well marked highways, run-off road mitigation and protection, large animal detection, and the latest version of the City Safety suite of collision avoidance and mitigation technology.

It's expected that the Volvo V90 will go on sale across Europe later this year. Australian timing has yet to be confirmed, but we'd expect to see it down under in 2017.

Australia

Volvo Cars Australia has confirmed with CarAdvice that the V90 will make its local debut some months after the S90’s August launch, with the first quarter of 2017 expected to be the most likely window.

Watch for the V90 to make its official debut late next week.
