Porsche 918 Spyder production ends

The most technologically-advanced Porsche model of all time - the Porsche 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid hypercar - has ended its production run after 21 months.

The model was always going to have a short lifespan, with the German brand stating from the outset that it would only ever build 918 examples of the petrol-electric coupe. The final model rolled off the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen production line bang on schedule, according to Porsche.

The car made its international debut arrived on the scene at the 2010 Geneva motor show in concept guise, before being sold on the market in left-hand-drive-friendly countries in late 2013.

The 918 Spyder is powered by a mid-mounted 4.6-litre V8 petrol engine developing 447kW at 8700rpm (maximum engine speed is 9150rpm), which is teamed to a pair of electric motors which add 210kW. All told, the maximum combined power output is 652kW, while peak torque depends on which gear you're in: it can range between 917Nm and a huge 1280Nm.

It set the lap record for street-legal vehicles with production tyres at the Nürburgring, posting a blistering time of 6 minutes 57 seconds – a record that has never been equalled by any other car since.

But as well as being fast, it was also frugal. Combined official fuel consumption was about 3.0 litres per 100 kilometres.

While it has met its end, Porsche says the lessons learned from the benchmark-setting supercar will not be forgotten fast.

"... The legacy of this technology pioneer will reach far beyond its production time. Future generations of sports cars will benefit directly from innovations of the 918 Spyder," a release from the brand stated.
