Hyundai Vision G Coupe Concept unveiled

The Hyundai Vision G has been unveiled at a media event at the Los Angeles Country Museum of Art, prior to its public unveiling at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this weekend.

According to Hyundai, the concept car's style is "purposefully understated, despite its size and dramatic lines".

The design is said to be centred around the notion of chivalry, which apparently was "a word [that the design team] felt best defined the idea that one doesn’t need to shout to be noticed and respected".

Design for the Vision G was handled by Hyundai's US design studios. Christopher Chapman, who lead the coupe's design team, stated that the Vision G "speaks to the owner rather than ‘the spectators’ who might see the car on the road, [the concept] appears dynamic and in constant motion".

He also noted that "the only time an owner sees the exterior of the car is when it’s standing still".

The Vision G is powered by the company's 313kW/519Nm 5.0-litre V8 petrol engine. Although no mention is made of which wheels are driven, the proportions of the vehicle suggest that the concept car uses a rear-wheel-drive platform, which is in keeping with the winged Genesis badges scattered around the vehicle.

If the concept vehicle, with its quilted ivory leather, thin lines of chrome and fine wood overlays, is an accurate reflection of the company's plans for a future Genesis-derived coupe, it will mark a radical departure from overtly sporting overtones of the first-generation Genesis Coupe.

Although the first-generation coupe (below), which is still on sale in some overseas markets, shared a platform and some drivetrains with its Lexus-chasing sedan sibling, the two had nothing in common in terms of design or philosophy.

Indeed, while the sedan eschewed Hyundai badges, the coupe sported its fair share of stylised H-logos and had an interior that seemed to owe more to the Elantra than its platform-mate.

The original Genesis coupe could, at one stage, be had with the choice of either a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with up to 202kW of power or a naturally aspirated 3.8-litre V6 maxing out at 260kW. Although the company displayed a number of V8-powered specials, a V8-powered coupe never ended up in showrooms.
