At 3990 for the three door and 14,990 for the 5 door the Up! is the most affordable Volkswagon in years. It's also the smallest, just 3 1/2 meters long half a meter shorter than the polo xx so the up is a parking champion in the city It weighs just 880 kilos or a big blokes worth less than the Polo, and uses 1 liter 3 cylinder engine that helps the Apt get to 100 kilometers an hour in 13.2 seconds while sipping just 4.4 liters of unleaded per 100 kilometers.

But don't worry the Up! isn't cramped, slow, and tinny. In fact, it represents the start of a new ultra-small hatch resurgence, packing big car safety, quality, and refinement, into its tiny dimensions. The Volkswagen Up is also masterfully packaged with good front and rear headroom and decent leg room.

Its dash board simple and funky the way an iPod is and it is similarly well made. It's three-cylinder engine offers excellent performance in the city. It's a bit slow to get off the line but once up and running, offers the sort of pep and enthusiasm for which city cars are renowned. The up feels light on it's feet, and it's backed by a charming sewing-machine three cylinder on the beat.

Perhaps surprisingly the Op[sp] offers terrific dynamics. Its steering is actually one of the best setups of any Volkswagen. light, yet sharp and precise, it points a shazzy that loves booby with you in the bends; rolling onto it's modest tires early, and plastering a big grin on your face. It's a bit like the Toyota 86 in that way, delivering enjoyment at legal speeds.

The short wheel base means the Up can get a bit bouncy over urban ripples but on really rough roads it offers fine ride quality. The fact the Volkswagen Up can deliver driving enjoyment, good interior space, and thrifty economy all for less than $58,000 marks it as clearly the best option in the sub light class.
