2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe revealed

Here it is, the 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, revealed in full ahead of its world premiere at the Frankfurt motor show in a few weeks and slated Australian launch in mid-2016.

The absolute pinnacle of the newly revealed Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe range serves as a two-doored counterpoint to the Mercedes-AMG C63 sedan and wagon models just rolling into Australia now.

As we well know, the C63 is far and away Mercedes-AMG's top-seller. That said, the compact A45, CLA45 and GLA45 compact models have been doing the heavy lifting of late, and have powered AMG sales in Australia to an all-time high.

Mercedes-Benz Australia sells a greater proportion of AMG models than almost anywhere else globally.

Positioned as much as a miniature AMG GT as anything else, the Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe is billed as a “landmark” car for the Affalterbach-based brand that moves the game forward. The headline statistics largely speak for themselves.

As is Mercedes-Benz Australia custom, only the most hardcore C63 S version will come here, powered by a ramped up version of AMG’s new staple 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 with 375kW between 550 and 6250rpm, and 700Nm between 1750 and 4500rpm — these are 25kW/50Nm more than the ‘regular’ Mercedes-AMG C63 models.

This is more even than the outgoing, most extreme C63 AMG Edition 507 with its 373kW/610Nm naturally aspirated 6.3-litre V8. It also utterly buries the BMW M4 and its 317kW/550Nm 3.0-litre force-fed inline six.

The two-door is only a handful of kilos lighter than the sedan at 1725kg, but it’s enough — alongside wider tyres (255mm front and 285mm rear) and shorter-legged rear-axle ratios — to shave one-tenth from its 0-100km/h sprint time, now 3.9 seconds — 0.2s faster than the M4. Top speed is governed at 250km/h.

The 4.0-litre Biturbo engine used across the C63 range and in the AMG GT has the unique characteristic of its two turbos being positioned between the cylinder banks rather than on the outside of them. This keeps it compact on its active engine mounts.

As we know from our experience in the four-door, its model-specific exhaust with flaps gives the C63 a badass exhaust note as well. The AMG version gets unique inlets and flics, a “twin-blade” radiator grille, an AMG A-wing front spoiler, unique side skirts, quad chrome-plated tail-pipes and a small rear spoiler.

Stylistically, as with non-AMG C-Class coupes, the C63 AMG S version gets a 60mm longer bonnet than before.

Inside the familiar, simplistic cabin are AMG touches such as labels, carbonfibre-weave finishes, faux suede on the flat-bottomed steering wheel and AMG racing dials.

Matched to the engine and sending torque to the rear wheels is an AMG Speedshift seven-speed automatic transmission with paddles and four modes, including Race. Fuel use is the same as the sedan, at a claimed 8.6 litres per 100km.

Under the body compared to the old one is a reworked suspension setup. It comprises a four-link arrangement up front and a new multi-link setup at the rear axle. The contact surfaces of the wheel bearings are 25mm further apart in the Coupe than the sedan, increasing the track.

You also get AMG Ride Control adaptive damping, an electronic rear-axle limited-slip differential (the non-S C63 AMG gets a mechanical LSD) that works in unison with the three-stage stability control.
