2016 McLaren 570GT debuts in Australia

McLaren has used the 2016 Australian Formula One Grand Prix to locally unveil the McLaren 570GT, the company's latest mid-engined sports car.

Based on the McLaren 570S, the 570GT starts at $438,000 driveaway and aims to offers buyers a slightly more practical approach to fast motoring.

Due to start arriving in Australia by the end of 2016, the Sports Series 570GT is powered by McLaren's 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged eight-cylinder engine that produces 419kW of power and 600Nm of torque. The drivetrain sends torque through a lightning fast seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox.

In a first for McLaren, the 570GT features a glass hatchback that teams with a carbon fibre structure to access a 220-litre cavity for storing luggage (this is in addition to the 150L storage area under the bonnet).

Another brand first is the glass panoramic roof that sits atop the driver and passenger. While it's UV coated to reduce heat within the cabin, the air conditioning system has been uplifted to ensure it can cope with the load (although we had no issues with the McLaren 650S Spider in 45 degree heat in the United Arab Emirates).

The interior of the 570GT can be customised to the customer's needs and offers the highest level of craftsmanship, with a focus on day-to-day driving - this includes small door pockets and handy storage areas throughout the cabin.

In a bid to reduce road noise, McLaren has also used Pirelli P Zero tyres made especially for this vehicle. The change in tyres has allowed McLaren to reduce rolling road noise by three decibels, which is a considerable reduction.

McLaren Automotive regional director David McIntyre told CarAdvice that the Woking-based marque is thrilled to officially unveil the 570GT in Australia.

"We’re excited to offer Australian customers and enthusiasts the opportunity to view our latest addition to the McLaren Sports Series,” McIntyre said.

"The most refined and road-biased McLaren yet, the 570GT is targeted towards longer journeys and weekends away."

The 570GT won't be short on performance, capable of sprinting from 0-100km/h in just 3.4 seconds, with a top speed of 328km/h. Almost as impressive is the standing quarter-mile time of 11.1 seconds, making it one of the fastest road cars on the market.

The 570GT's carbon-fibre-composite shell helps a great deal here, not only aiding in a 42:58 weight distribution, but also reducing overall weight to 1350kg.

Do you like the look of the McLaren 570GT? Do you think it's a better purchase option than the 570S?
