Peugeot says the 508 is a grand touring car, and it's pretty hard to argue with that. The new 508 is a refined prestige driving experience. it strikes exactly the right balance between refinement and driving engagement for a car in this class. The multi-colour head-up display is brilliant. It maximizes the time your eyes spend locked onto the road, and that's a real plus for safety.

There's adaptive steering and braking, automatic high beam activation, et cetera. This car is packed with technology. The 508 launches in Australia with two efficient and punchy turbo diesel engines, a two-liter and a two-point-two. Five stars and six air bags means maximum crash worthiness together with a host of other advanced safety technology.

Kept price servicing even protects your wallet from any unexpected financial impacts. The new 508 is available in three flavors: the entry level active, the more luxurious Allure, and the perfomance luxury GT. If you are in the market for a midsized European prestige car, you might have already narrowed it down to the Audi, the Benz, or the BMW.

It's probably time you've expanded that shortlist to include the numbers 5, 0, and 8. This is John Cadogan at the Peugeot 508 Launch in Victoria reporting for Car Advice.
