The 2005 Subaru Liberty GT is an interesting and sometimes understated car, combining the best of the Japanese automaker's luxury appointments, with the award-winning driveline of the Impreza WRX.

As a package the Liberty ticked all the boxes when I purchased it about 2 years ago, the performance of the GT is excellent; a turbocharged 180kW/310Nm variant of the EJ20 boxer engine provides ample power. However, sadly the boxer note is somewhat subdued. It uses some fuel but this is expected, the transmission is good, however its slow-speed driveability is not fantastic. The car is surefooted in all conditions with symmetrical AWD and rides well on most surfaces; braking is good, however there is not a great deal of pedal feel.

The styling of the Liberty is sensational; starting with a simple exterior, with only subtle changes for the GT variant it blends nicely into the crowd. The interior of the car has taken Subaru’s quality and design to another level, the instrumentation is great and the all driving controls are ergonomically perfect – however a reach adjustable steering column would be nice. The leather upholstery does the job, but isn’t as good as other luxury cars, the factory sunroof is nice – but not a necessity.

Driving position is great; however it takes time to tune the electric driver’s seat into a favourite position. Other electronics in the car are basic, no ESC, but standard ABS, EBD and 8 airbags, giving the car a 5 star rating in 2005. The audio aspects of the car are mind-blowing, including a 13-speaker McIntosh system connected to an in-dash six-CD stacker. I have since added an iPod interface.

Overall I am happy with the vehicle and would recommend it to anyone looking for a vehicle in the sports-luxury class.
