2011 FORD FPV GT-E
Personally I have never been a big fan of gregarious sports cars - you know the ones, they have the over-sized rear spoilers and multiple racing stripes. When I was introduced to a vehicle in Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) GT E I was pleasantly surprised.
- Supercharged V8 of course, understated exterior design
- Low on luxury internally, sports seat headrests annoying
Inside the GT E is very well appointed boasting a full leather interior with walnut inlays and much of the safety technology you would expect to find in today’s executive vehicle.
The first thing that strikes you when you start the engine is the power that is lying in wait under the bonnet. This car packs a supercharged 5.0 litre Boss V8 engine which delivers 335KW of blistering power to the 19” wheels.
This power is obvious from the moment you touch the accelerator, the car leaps forward with such eagerness that the temptation is to let it have its head.
This is not a vehicle to let loose on suburban streets however, you can get to 100km/h in 4.9 seconds, and believe me 60km/h is reached in the blink of an eye.
The drive is delivered through a German ZF six speed automatic which is both elegant and intuitive. Upshifts are lightening fast and deliver smooth drive. Downshifts are responsive to your driving style and only kick down hard when your right foot requests it.
The power is wrestled relatively smoothly to the road by user-selected traction control, (keep it on in the wet!) The car stops exceptionally well thanks to a premium Brembo brakes and an electronic control package. As you would expect, the ride is firm and sporty allowing you to feel the road at any speed.
Overall, a very enjoyable and responsive car to drive in any setting, and truly a lot of car for the dealer list price of $82,540.
