2006 MERCEDES-BENZ CLK350 ELEGANCE
Inevitably there will be sceptics - who will challenge that a Septuagenarian can objectively write a review of a soft-top.
These doubters will query whether such a car should be in the hands of an old-fogey anyway. I would censure this by stating that that in fifty-five years of motoring I have owned a wide variety of cars and driven more than a million miles. In my youth I did some competition work and have always driven with vigour convinced that experience is the only way to perfect the art.
Current Australian speed-limits deny the potential of such a car. In Britain and other parts of the northern hemisphere it is still possible to drive a car like this – as it was intended to be driven. This limiting factor aside however there are other signal benefits to owning and driving such a car. My first soft top was a meagre MG Midget and as the hood mechanism was broken it actually became an ‘open-tourer’ for its life in my hands. This little car was my initiation into the delights of motoring with no roof and only the sky above. I did get a soaking more than once but the only time I worried about it, was when I had a girl in the car with me. I have never lost that simply unique feeling of, to use a cliché, ‘wind-in-the-hair’ fun.
The Mercedes CLK350 has no equal for me and I feel at ease and ‘at-home’ when I am behind the wheel. Over the years I have changed my cars as easily as changing my shirt BUT this one will stay with me – come what may.
It is the finest MB I have owned and epitomises my definition of sports car.
