There isn't much bad I can say about the AU Fairmont despite people's criticisms of the design of the poor car. It is quite a nice car and the best thing about this car is their reliability and endurance. If you service it once a year or twice a year depending how often you drive it, you have no problems! Even if it is very reliable and sometimes can cope with more than a year of no servicing, I would recommend servicing as all cars should be!
- Very reliable, long lasting, smooth and quiet, good cooling system, easy steering
- Low door frame, gas guzzler
The cooling system is so good, the car stays cool all the time, and I believe it is attributed to the fact that it has a huge cooling system, unlike the Holdens!
I would say for the sedan IF you have gas, space isn't the best if you need to carry big items home without a trailer, so tow bar is recommended, otherwise the AU station wagon or ute are the better options.
The steering is so smooth and easy, and it has power steering as well as cruise control. Just one thing I would say is try not to steer right all the way to the other end of the steering wheel too often or the power steering wears out and makes an oooooooooo noise that it will need to be fixed fairly urgently if it happens, otherwise it's all good.
The car speeds up quite nicely too and tows really well and it travels well on long trips apart from the gas that gets used up quickly but this may be due to the brand of the gas that was installed before my car was purchased so it may be a matter of what gas brand/installer you may have used for your AU Ford.
The computer controls work quite reliably for a long time and rarely have problems but it pays to get the computer checked out every two years for any reprogramming that may be needed, but rarely see any problems in that department.
The only gripe here is the lower door frames, so you bump your head on it easily. Other than that, it is a very good second-hand car for a family and if you want reliability and low costs in maintenance, then this is the car for you.
