Small with big is good. Just look back to the good old days. The Holden Torana GTR XU-1 - which I’m proud to say was my introduction to motoring (courtesy of my father) - was one such recipe.

Small body, powerful engine - it made for a great package. So if you combine something small with a torquey engine, you’re automatically onto a good thing, right? Well, yes and no. Small with big is good … usually.

Some pernicious comments about looks were thrown my way recently. Now I know that my nose is a tad on the winged-keel side, and that I’m about as handsome as a frog’s achilles tendon, but the statements weren’t about me.

No, they were about the car I was driving. The photos might give you a clue. You see, the Volvo V70 wagon I was driving, was big, long and black. “So, how’s the hearse?” was a question I didn’t quite know how to answer.

My wife was driving behind me the other day. I happened to be behind the wheel of this Volvo C30 S at the time. She rang me on my mobile to tell me something. As I picked up the phone and put it on speaker (naturally), I didn’t even get a hello.

The first thing she said to me was, “You know, your bum looks big in that.”

Recent investments in Ford Motor Co. by Kirk Kerkorian’s Tracinda Corp has worried Volvo fans as the investment group pushes Ford to unload the Swedish marquee.

While Ford stocks have hit records highs, Kerkorian representative Jerry York told Automotive News that the best move for the company is to “unload Volvo and Mercury”. York and Ford CEO Alan Mulally met in early April, a few days after Tracinda Corp. began buying Ford shares.

Volvo to develop plug-in hybrid cars

Volvo logoWhen we saw the Volvo C30 ReCharge Concept last year, we wondered why Volvo wasn’t building it straight away. Not only was it based on the gorgeous C30 design, but it was also extremely fuel efficient.

Unfortunately the ReCharge was a one-off concept, not exactly ready for mass production, well, not yet anyway. Thankfully though, the Swedish company has today announced plans to mass produce plug-in hybrid cars.
