Australia’s most popular small car just got a whole lot safer with Toyota offering vehicle stability control (VSC) as standard across the entire Toyota Corolla range.

Each Toyota Corolla produced since December has received the standard fitment of VSC, which also comes with traction control.

This move will have a big impact on the level of safety of Australian public roads in the long-term, with the Corolla remaining as the nation’s top-selling car for the past decade.

Coupled with an upgrade late last year which made stability and traction control standard for the Corolla hatch, road-safety experts have said the technology could prevent nearly one-third of all fatal crashes and reduce rollover risk by as much as 80 per cent.

The system works by automatically applying the brakes to individual wheels and, where appropriate, reduces engine power, helping to “steer” the vehicle where the driver intends to go.

Since its introduction in 2000, the Toyota Corolla has sold approximately 1.1 million Corollas in Australia – or around 22 per cent of all Toyota vehicles sold in this country.

Pricing

Corolla Ascent sedan $21,390
Corolla Ascent hatch $21,740

Corolla Conquest sedan $24,750
Corolla Conquest hatch $24,500

Corolla Levin SX hatch $25,690

Corolla Levin ZR hatch $28,900

Corolla Ultima sedan (auto)	$30,690

Automatic transmission is a $2,000 option for all models except Ultima (standard).

*Update* Toyota Motor Corporation – Japan has advised the electric power-steering system used in Corolla models sold in Australia is different from that used for models sold in the United States.

In another twist in the Toyota recall saga the US highway safety officials are rumoured to begin a formal investigation into complaints about the Toyota Corolla’s steering.

According to an anonymous source inside the agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will concentrate its efforts on 2009 and 2010 model year Corollas.

The problem may result in Toyota recalling the Corolla with the automaker’s quality chief, Shinichi Sasaki, stating earlier today that Toyota may consider a Corolla recall.

According to Automotive News U.S.A, the Toyota Corolla has had 83 power-steering complaints filed against it since April 2008. More than three quarters of the complaints say that the vehicle unexpectedly veers to the left or right at 40 miles (64km) an hour and up. They further suggest that after attempting to straighten the car, it may overcorrect. There have been no cases of the issue reported to Toyota Australia.

As the new models make use of an electric power steering system, the problem may simply be due to a change in steering response compared with the older Corollas which used a hydraulic power steering system.

Such an investigation by U.S authorities is normal procedure when complaints are lodged and a process which happens to all manufacturers, nonetheless the timing couldn’t be worst for Toyota amid an escalating recall crisis.

The recall issues have become a nightmare for the Big T as the Americans make the automaker the focus of congressional hearings next week.

The Toyota Corolla is the best selling car in the world, having built its reputation on reliability.

Headlining the unveilings is the world’s first look at the showroom-ready Toyota Auris (Corolla in Australia) HSD (hybrid synergy drive).

Built in Britain at Toyota’s Burnaston factory, the Auris HSD will join the European line-up mid-year and marks another step towards Toyota’s ambition to make hybrid powertrain technology available throughout its entire model range by the beginning of the next decade.

Joining it on the podium will be the Prius Plug-In Hybrid and the all-electric FT-EV II sports car concept, as well as Toyota’s next generation fuel cell hybrid vehicle, the FCHV-adv.

Of most immediate relevance to Australia is the debut of the 2010 Toyota RAV4, which will display a sophisticated, Toyota-family front end and a revised interior.

Toyota will hold its press conference and official unveilings at the Geneva Motor Show on March 2.

Toyota has issued its plan to fix the 4.4 million vehicles recalled around the world with potential sticking accelerators.

The issue involves a friction device in the pedal designed to provide the proper “feel” by adding resistance and making the pedal steady and stable. The device includes a shoe that rubs against an adjoining surface during normal pedal operation.

Due to the materials used, wear and environmental conditions, Toyota says these surfaces may, over time, begin to stick and release instead of operating smoothly. In some cases, friction can increase to a point that the pedal is slow to return to the idle position or, in rare cases, the pedal sticks, leaving the throttle partially open.

Toyota’s solution for current owners is to install a precision-cut steel reinforcement bar into the assembly that will reduce the surface tension between the friction shoe and the adjoining surface. With this reinforcement in place, the excess friction that can cause the pedal to stick is eliminated.

President and CEO of Toyota Motor Europe, Tadashi Arashima, said the solution has been developed and rigorously tested by his engineers.

“We understand that the current situation is creating concerns, and we deeply regret it.

“At Toyota, we are fully committed to safety. We know what the problem is and how to fix it, so now our focus is to make that fix as quickly as possible. We will make the necessary checks to ensure future customers do not receive an affected vehicle,” Mr Arashima said.

The first shipments of parts required for this fix will begin arriving in Europe next week, while Toyota has already implemented an effective production solution for vehicles to be sold in Europe.

The official European recall list:

Aygo (Feb 2005 – Aug 2009)

iQ (Nov 2008 – Nov 2009)

Yaris (Nov 2005 – Sep 2009)

Auris (Oct 2006 – 5 Jan 2010)

Corolla (Oct 2006 – Dec 2009)

Verso (Feb 2009 – 5 Jan 2010)

Avensis (Nov 2008 – Dec 2009)

RAV4 (Nov 2005 – Nov 2009)

In addition, plans to contact the affected customers are currently being put into place.

Numbers of recalled vehicles are believed to be as high as 1.8 million in Europe, with another 2.3 million in the US, 270,000 in Canada, and 75,552 in China.

Toyota Motor Sales in the US is hoping to get all the recall repairs done within 90 days, planning multiple mailings as it aims for a 100 percent complete rate.

It said the repair will take around 30 minutes, will be at no cost to the owner, and said the pedal should feel exactly as it did before.

Around 200,000 Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 city cars are assembled each year mostly for the European market at the Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile plant in Kolin, 60km east of Prague, Czech Republic.

Developed by Toyota in the only PSA-Toyota joint venture, the cars wearing French badging are structurally very similar to the Aygo and need to be recalled to fix the same problem.

“For Peugeot 107s and Citroen C1s, we are going to carry out an identical campaign as Toyota,” a PSA spokesman said.

“We are at the investigation phase to establish which phase of production is concerned.” PSA is yet to announce when the recall will be launched and how many vehicles are affected.

As many as 1.8 million Toyota vehicles were recalled in Europe last Friday and included eight models with build dates ranging from February 2005 to January 2010.

The top-selling Yaris, along with the Auris, Avensis, Aygo, Corolla, iQ, RAV4, and Verso, are among the latest recall, taking the global tally to almost eight million vehicles. No Lexus models were included in the European recall, and as far as Toyota Europe is aware, no accidents have resulted from the accelerator problem.

Toyota production in Europe will not be suspended as it has already sourced different parts to combat the issue.

Following the lead of General Motors, Ford US has introduced an even more aggressive incentive program to encourage Japanese car buyers to abandon their brands in the wake of Toyota’s accelerator recall issues.

From today until March 1, Ford is offering US$1000 rebates to owners of Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicles as well as Honda and Acura cars made within the last 15 years.

Ford said Honda was included in the incentives not over any quality or safety concerns but because Toyota owners are likely to consider Hondas as a replacement.

The rebate is also available to customers who are currently leasing Toyota or Honda vehicles with a contract expiring by June 30.

The incentive program applies to all Ford vehicles excluding Ford hybrids, Edge all-wheel drive SE, F-150 Raptor, Taurus SE, Shelby GT500 and KR versions of the Mustang.

Honda and Nissan have confirmed that they will not be introducing any incentive programs like GM and Ford, while Chrysler has said it does not currently have any plans to do so.

Ford itself has not been entirely immune from the accelerator issues that have plagued Toyota, yesterday being forced to suspend production of its Transit Classic commercial van in China.

Ford has produced 1663 vehicles for the Chinese market with CTS Corp pedals (the company responsible for the defective Toyota accelerators) since supply began in December. So far it remains unclear how many vans have been delivered to dealers and customers.

Ford confirmed that CTS does not supply pedals for any of its other vehicles.

Meanwhile, Toyota yesterday extended its floor mat recall to another 1.1 million vehicles in the US, taking the total number up to approximately 5.4 million.

The latest recall includes the 2008-2010 Highlander and 2009-2010 Corolla, Venza, Matrix and Pontiac Vibe.

It is still assessing whether it will recall up to two million more vehicles in Europe also believed to be affected by the sticking accelerator malfunction.

Toyota US has suspended sales of eight models while it finds a solution to the sticking accelerator problem that last week forced it to recall 2.3 million vehicles.

It will also stop production of the vehicles for the week beginning February 1.

Toyota Group vice president and Toyota Division general manager, Bob Carter, said the suspensions confirmed how seriously his company was taking the issue.

“Helping ensure the safety of our customers and restoring confidence in Toyota are very important to our company. This action is necessary until a remedy is finalised. We’re making every effort to address this situation for our customers as quickly as possible,” he said.

As CarAdvice reported last week, Toyota believes “there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position”.

The eight suspended vehicles made up 65 percent of Toyota’s market share in the US in 2009, including the nation’s top-selling car, the Camry.

The latest accelerator pedal recall applies to the following vehicles:

2009-2010 RAV4

2009-2010 Corolla

2009-2010 Matrix

2005-2010 Avalon

2007-2010 Camry

2010 Highlander

2007-2010 Tundra

2008-2010 Sequoia

Toyota vehicles sold in Australia are not affected by the sticking accelerator problem or the recall.

Toyota has launched its new 2010 Auris (Corolla) in the UK, with a sharper appearance inside and out, higher quality materials throughout the cabin and a suspension system tweaked for extra ride comfort and stability.

The range of three- and five-door hatchbacks have also been re-tuned for better performance, fuel economy and lower CO2 emissions.

A restyled exterior features a comprehensively reworked front end with a new deep bumper with integrated fog lamps (TR and SR models), new swept-back headlamps, a revised bonnet profile with stronger crease lines and a grille that adopts the Toyota family identity established by the latest generation Avensis and Verso.

New 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels have been designed for the TR and SR models and all versions feature turn indicator lights integrated into the door mirrors. At the rear there is a smart flash of chrome across the top of the number plate, revised lamp clusters and a new rear bumper with extended corner sections that create a “catamaran” look. Owners can choose from seven exterior colours, including three new metallic shades.

Inside a soft-touch material has been introduced across the top of the instrument binnacle and around the glovebox, and the centre console has been revised with changes to the instrument design for smarter appearance and improved clarity. Auris’s distinctive bridged centre console has a new silver finish that matches the doorhandles and the shape of the handbrake has been changed for easier operation and improved tactile quality.

White illumination has been introduced for the Optitron instrument dials, with sportier amber lighting for the analogue instruments featured in the new Auris SR. To complete the fresh look, new cloth upholstery designs have been introduced.

Suspension tuning has improved Auris’s ride and handling to better suit European roads and driver preferences while the speed-sensistive Electronic Power Steering (EPS) has also been revised to deliver better feedback and improved vehicle agility.

Under the bonnet Auris retains its current range of petrol and diesel engines and six-speed manual and MultiMode transmissions, all of which benefit from Toyota Optimal Drive technologies for reduced weight, higher efficiency and reduced emissions. Performance data is unchanged, but they continue to offer a strong balance of performance, fuel efficiency and low emissions.

The range comprises a 1.3-litre petrol engine, with manual transmission and Stop & Start technology; a 1.6-litre petrol engine, with manual or MultiMode automatic transmission; and 1.4-litre turbo-diesel engine, again with manual gearbox or Multimode automatic.

The new Auris range now adopts a three-grade line-up, with a new sporty SR grade joining the established T2 and TR models. The TR will remain at the heart of the range and is expected to account for around 80 per cent of the UK sales mix.

Pricing for the 2010 Auris ranges from £14,463 to £16,495 (AUD $25,764 to $29,383).

Toyota US is recalling another 2.3 million vehicles to correct its continued sticking acceleration issues.

Today’s recall (which applies only to vehicles sold in the US) is in addition to the 4.2 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles already recalled to correct floor mats that could slide and trap the accelerator if not properly secured to the floor with retaining hooks.

Up to 1.7 million vehicles will be subject to both the ongoing recall and today’s new one.

Toyota Motor Sales Group Vice President, Irv Miller, said Toyota is working quickly to amend the latest accelerator problem.

“In recent months, Toyota has investigated isolated reports of sticking accelerator pedal mechanisms in certain vehicles without the presence of floor mats.

“Our investigation indicates that there is a possibility that certain accelerator pedal mechanisms may, in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position. Consistent with our commitment to the safety of our cars and our customers, we have initiated this voluntary recall action.”

Today’s accelerator pedal recall applies to the following vehicles:

2009-2010 RAV4

2009-2010 Corolla

2009-2010 Matrix

2005-2010 Avalon

2007-2010 Camry

2010 Highlander

2007-2010 Tundra

2008-2010 Sequoia

Toyota’s official press release continues:

“The condition is rare, but can occur when the pedal mechanism becomes worn and, in certain conditions, the accelerator pedal may become harder to depress, slower to return or, in the worst case, stuck in a partially depressed position.

“In the event that a driver experiences an accelerator pedal that sticks in a partial open throttle position or returns slowly to idle position, the vehicle can be controlled with firm and steady application of the brakes. The brakes should not be pumped repeatedly because it could deplete vacuum assist, requiring stronger brake pedal pressure. The vehicle should be driven to the nearest safe location, the engine shut off and a Toyota dealer contacted for assistance.

“Toyota will continue to investigate incidents of unwanted acceleration and take appropriate measures to address any trends that are identified.”

CarAdvice earlier this week reported on the case of a 2007 Toyota Avalon which experienced sudden unintended acceleration, which fits into today’s recall batch.

Toyota aims to produce one million petrol-electric hybrid vehicles in 2011 to remain in the lead in the growing market for low-emissions cars, Japanese business newspaper Nikkei reports.

The target would effectively mean doubling production from 2009, when it was expected Toyota manufactured slightly more than 500,000 hybrids – around eight percent of its total global production.

The Japanese company’s push is starting at home, ramping up production of hybrids with the local launch of its second hybrid vehicle, the Sai sedan, last year to accompany the third generation of the Prius.

Toyota sold 208,876 Prius units in 2009, making it the best-selling car in Japan. Sales increased by more than 280 percent over 2008 and since the release of the new model in May it has not been dethroned from top spot.

Hybrids and other low-emissions vehicles enjoy strong sales in Japan thanks to healthy tax breaks and subsidies from the environmentally conscious government.

And Kazaka Securities chief analyst, Yoshihiko Tabei, does not see much changing for Toyota any time soon.

“For the foreseeable future, the focus of Toyota’s (low-emission car) strategy will be on hybrids, not electric or fuel-cell cars.

“Except for Honda, Toyota is facing little competition in hybrids and is set to put distance between itself and other automakers,” he said.

The Nikkei suggested Toyota has plans to add up to 10 new hybrid models in the next few years, with the ambition to have a hybrid in every global model by the beginning of the next decade.

It is also increasing the number of sites where it can assemble hybrid models.

Australia became home to Toyota’s fifth hybrid facility with the Hybrid Camry production line in Melbourne, and the UK is set to follow within months with the production of the Auris (Corolla) Hybrid in Derby from midyear.

The Toyota Corolla has been given a facelift in time for the new year, but the most important changes are beneath the skin.

All new-look hatch models now come with electronic stability control (ESC) and traction control as standard and a minimum of four airbags.

Corolla Ascent and Levin SX models get front and side airbags, while the Levin ZR and Conquest models score seven airbags (front, side, curtains and driver’s knee).

The Ascent sedan remains the least well appointed, with just front airbags standard and side airbags and traction control optional.

Curtain airbags and ESC are not available as options.

The higher-spec Conquest and Ultima sedans both come with traction control and ESC as well as six airbags.

Visually the new hatch looks sharper thanks to tinted headlights and a remodelled bumper, but still retains the family resemblance with a broader grille and lower-air intake similar to the Prius.

The taillights and rear bumper have also undergone minor changes to suit the car’s more pointed, sporty styling.

The Conquest and Levin hatches get new 16-inch alloys, premium steering wheel with audio and other controls and a six-CD changer with a 4.3-inch TFT screen.

Audio equipment has been improved across the range with MP3/iPod/USB/Bluetooth all compatible and all standard, while the usual upgrades to the look and feel of interior trims and surfaces are also evident.

A flat-bottomed steering wheel, two fresh exterior colours (Levin SX and ZR) and an LED shift illumination display (ZR only) round out the changes.

Pricing (not including dealer delivery or statutory charges):

Manual hatch

Ascent $21,740 (+ $300 on previous model)

Conquest $24,500 (- $1000)

Levin SX $25,690 (+ $190)

Levin ZR $28,900 (- $1090)

In a positive move for Australian car sales, motorists bought more cars and trucks in October than for the same month last year – the first time in 16 months the industry has seen a year-on-year increase in monthly sales.

Toyota Australia senior executive director sales and marketing, Mr David Buttner, welcomed the October-on-October increase for the industry, saying it pointed to a strong end-of-year selling season.

In October, the industry sold 80,813 new motor vehicles – an increase of 2.2 per cent over the same month last year.

Not since June 2008 have a month’s sales been higher than for the corresponding month of the previous year.

“Over the past six months, confidence has grown among fleet and private customers, enabling them to return to the market,” Mr Buttner said.

“This has been supported by the Federal Government’s stimulus package, including specific support for business owners requiring vehicles.

“The general uplift in consumer sentiment plus the investment allowance that takes us through to December 31 should result in a strong end to 2009.

“The full-year result of around 920,000 sales will be appreciably stronger than most observers were predicting just a few months’ ago.”

In October, Toyota’s Corolla was again the country’s most popular vehicle with 3,724 sales, narrowly beating HiLux into second with 3,707 sales.

Corolla has topped the sales charts for three of the past four months and is Australia’s best-selling vehicle in the financial year.

Other segment leaders for Toyota were Camry, LandCruiser 200 Series, HiAce van, HiAce bus and Tarago.

Toyota remained market leader with sales of almost 17,900 vehicles in October – more than 7,000 ahead of its nearest rival.

After 10 months’ sales this year, Toyota dealers have sold more than 160,000 vehicles; no other company has reached 100,000.

With Toyota Australia

Toyota is set to unveil a new hybrid concept based on its Corolla model at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor show, a car that is expected to be the second of eight new hybrid models that Toyota Australia plans to roll out over the next four years.

Known in Europe as the Auris HSD Full Hybrid Concept, it represents a milestone in Toyota’s strategy by introducing its full hybrid technology to a mainstream model.

This marks the first step in the deployment of Hybrid Synergy Drive across the company’s model range

The new Prius Plug-in Hybrid Concept will also make its world premiere in Frankfurt, expanding the capabilities of Toyota’s full hybrid technology.

This latest evolution will allow pure electric operation for short-range day-to-day transportation.

An extensive field trial is due to commence in Europe by early 2010 which will see over 150 units being leased to selected fleet customers.

Frankfurt will also stage the European premiere of the iconic, all-new Toyota LandCruiser, which will go on sale later this year.

Lexus has given a first glimpse of just what its compact entry into the premium hybrid market will look like when it is released at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this month.

The premium Toyota brand says the LF-CH, you can bet that won’t be its final name, will offer Lexus Hybrid Drive in a practical five-door body that meets the needs of customers in the premium compact market.

Lexus says the LF-CH will reinforce its position as the only manufacturer to offer a range of hybrid vehicles.

LF-CH combines stylish design and full hybrid technology, in a practical five-door compact package, to fulfil the needs of the most demanding premium compact segment customers.

Benefiting from an electric-only driving capability, a key feature of Lexus Hybrid Drive, LF-Ch will allow for virtually silent urban driving with zero emissions.

More detailed information and images of the Lexus LF-Ch will be released on September 11.

The rear three-quarter illustration shows an edgy hatchback with deep aerodynamic aids on the rear end.

Using the 1.8-litre petrol-electric drive system from the Prius, the LF-Ch is based on the same front-drive Toyota small-car platform that underpins the Prius and Corolla, which will also appear at Frankfurt with a hybrid drive system.

Toyota has said it will launch eight new hybrid models in Australia within the next four years and the Hybrid Corolla is expected to be the next of those.

Toyota Motor Corporation will recall 688,314 cars made at its two China joint ventures starting Tuesday to fix a faulty window-control switch, which is the carmaker’s largest recall in China.

Reuters Newsagency quotes analysts as saying the recall will not have any long-term impact on the Japanese company’s growth prospect in China as the defect is minor and only involves a single supplier.

The recall, which comes at time when Toyota has lost some of its steam after years of fast growth, may push some buyers to its European and US rivals for now, the analysts said.

“The size of the recall is big, but it won’t be a major problem for Toyota given the nature of the defect. Still, there will be some impact for the short term,” said Huang Zherui, an analyst with CSM Worldwide, a global industry consultancy.

In the first half, the Japanese automaker sold 284,000 passenger cars in China, almost unchanged from a year earlier, due largely to its limited offering of small models.

In contrast, General Motors Company reported a 38 per cent rise in its sales in the country, helped by Beijing’s aggressive cut in sales tax for small cars.

Toyota’s recall, announced by China’s quality watchdog late on Sunday, included 384,736 Camry models made by Toyota’s joint venture in south China with Guangzhou Automobile Industry Group between May 2006 and December 2008.

A total of 22,767 Yaris light cars made by the same venture between May and December of last year also will be recalled, the statement said.

The list also included 35,523 Vios cars made at its joint venture with FAW between February and December 2008 and 245,288 Corollas made at the venture from May 2007 to December 2008, it said.

A spokesman for Toyota’s China operations said he had received no reports of injuries or accidents linked with the defect.

Toyota has plans to produce a petrol-electric hybrid version of its Auris (known in Australia as Corolla) hatchback, a car that could also come to Australia, at its British factory around 2012, according to newsagency reports.

Reuters Newsagency quotes a Japanese industry newspaper as saying this would mark Toyota’s first locally produced hybrid car in Europe.

The Nikkan Jidosha Shimbun said that the Auris (Corolla Hatchback) was due for a full remodelling around 2012, and Toyota would offer a hybrid version for production and sale locally in Europe.

A spokeswoman said Toyota could not comment on future product plans.

Toyota Australia has previously said that it will be introduce a number of hybrid models over the next four years, and a Corolla hybrid would be likely to be amongst those introduced.

The Auris was Toyota’s third-best-selling model in Europe during the first five months of this year after the Yaris and Aygo Light Car models.

Reuters says that days after taking the helm at the company founded by his grandfather, Toyota president Akio Toyoda said last month that the world’s biggest carmaker would be more selective in utilising its resources, dropping a strategy of becoming a full-line maker in all regions.

One example of that was to focus on offering hybrid vehicles in Europe, Mr Toyoda said, implying that it may drop a plan it shelved earlier to cooperate with affiliate Isuzu to beef up its diesel line-up for Europe.

Toyota builds most of its hybrid vehicles in Japan, but also produces a small number of Prius cars in China and the Camry hybrid in the US state of Kentucky.

It has already announced plans to also begin production of the Camry Hybrid in Thailand and Australia, and the Prius in Mississippi.

Toyota has a goal of selling at least 1 million hybrid vehicles a year within the next few years and has said it would offer the hybrid option on all of its models by 2020.

- by Matt Brogan

Last week I drove Toyota’s top-shelf Corolla Ultima, and although the car was not without its merits, my summation was that for the price I considered it to be good, almost average, middle-of-the-road, but certainly nothing to write home about.

That said you would assume that by jumping in to a lower-spec model this week that my impressions would be even less enthusiastic, somewhat cheapened, and that the base model sibling of the Corolla range would pale into insignificance against its more well equipped brother.

I guess then the Corolla Ascent proves what they say about assumptions.

My first, and perhaps most obvious reason for liking the Ascent is, quite simply, price. It’s considerably cheaper than the Ultima – even when optioned up – making the Ascent a far more reasonable prospect when shopping in this category.

That’s not to say you’re missing out by purchasing the cheaper version, far from it. In fact all things considered the Ascent offers a very good standard level of equipment that can be tailored, rather cheaply, to suit your own needs.

In this instance, the Ascent tested was optioned with metallic paint and Toyota’s Cruise & Enhanced Safety Pack that, as the same suggests, features cruise control and additional safety equipment (seven airbags and ESP), as well as a sassy little leather steering wheel with audio and cruise controls.

Similarly to the Ultima tested last week our Ascent also features the optional Optitron Combimetre instrumentation panel that in my opinion really lifts the car’s appeal from a driver’s viewpoint offering crisp, clear and easy-on-the-eyes information, especially at night.

Add to that appeal a decent stereo, air-conditioning, front power windows and mirrors, remote central locking, adequate storage and a simple user-friendliness that all lend the Ascent a baseline of value that has been synonymous with the Corolla nameplate for more than 40 years.

On the downside though the “C” pillar is rather large and obstructive when reversing from a 45 degree park and can make lane changing slightly perilous.

Road noise too is a touch loud at highway speeds and I found the low-beam lights to be practically useless on country roads, so-much-so that I found myself forgetting I’d selected high beam.

The Gemini-esque gear shift position can hinder access to the air-conditioning controls when in first, third or fifth, more so for the passenger, but you’re unlikely to care given the sporty feel it offers the driver.

The cabin is roomy given the proportions availed, and quite comfortable too. Four adults fit comfortably (though seating is for five) with rear passengers afforded more than adequate leg and headroom.

Unfortunately the same can’t be said for cargo space which is a little limited compared to some rivals at 283-litres. If this is of concern, the more generous sedan may be of interest, though it’s not nearly as versatile as the hatch, where the 60:40 split fold seats offer a large area for oversized items, perfect for those weekend projects.

As for what’s up front, I’m pleased to say the six-speed manual really does make the most of the 1.8-litre engine’s 100kw/175Nm offering, feeling much more alive than the auto model we tested last week.

Better fuel economy, increased performance (just compare the 0-100 figures) and a gearbox that feels incredibly well suited to the engine in terms of ratio spread means that unless you really take issue with using a clutch, the manual variant is a far better option for extracting the most from your Corolla – and your wallet!

The clutch is spot on in terms of weighting – something I have noticed can be far too light and devoid of feel in many of Corolla’s direct rivals – while the ESP system is very well calibrated, not too sustained or intrusive. ABS braking with EBA and EBD is both confident and progressive.

While it may be built for a price the Corolla feels solid, drives well and offers very good value for money, and with all of us driving our dollar even harder at the moment (no pun intended), it’s not difficult to see why the humble Ascent is so popular.

With the seven airbag enhanced safety pack available from just $1500 – and let’s face it you’d be mad not to tick this box – a basic, white, manual Corolla can be driven away from less than $24,000 – and what ever way you look at it, that’s not a bad deal.

CarAdvice Rating:

A lot of people refer to the humble yet popular Corolla as “white goods” motoring which, if you are to take the glass half-full attitude, translates to a reliable, affordable and necessary piece of household equipment – not such a bad thing.

That being the case then in our push-button, touch-screen world it could well be said that the Corolla Ultima is indeed white goods motoring in the truest sense of the meaning – albeit with a stainless steel finish.

Though it might be viewed as conservative stylistically, the Corolla Ultima does set itself rightly at the top of the model range with a few subtle styling cues lending the upper spec sedan a little more class than its poorer siblings.

Handsome 16-inch alloy wheels with front and rear mudflaps, xenon-bulbed auto headlamps with washers and height adjustment, front fog lamps and chrome bright work under the side glass all do their bit in adding to the car’s overall appeal, without that is challenging convention or making any elitist statements.

Inside the roomy and well laid-out cabin you’ll find all the mod-cons you would expect of a top shelf small sedan including leather upholstery, leather wrapped tilt/slide steering wheel with audio and cruise controls, single-zone climate control, auto-dimming rear view mirror, rain sensing wipers, cruise control, smart card entry with push button starter, trip computer, power windows and mirrors and a six CD tuner with Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity and auxiliary input.

The instrumentation, known as an ‘Optitron Combimetre’ in Toyota speak, is a stand-out item for me as it is very attractive, crisp, and informative while at the same time being simple to navigate. All ancillary controls too fall readily to hand providing no challenge to those who might be challenged by the whizz-bang equipment levels found in some similarly spec’ed rivals.

While the gadgetary offerings from the Corolla Ultima are indeed rewarding, the performance on hand is anything but, and while it’s certainly not the worst performing car I’ve driven in this category, the 1.8-litre VVTi four-cylinder it is a little asthmatic, especially with four adults on board.

Developing 100kW @ 6000rpm (and 175Nm @ 4400rpm) the written down figure isn’t really the issue, it’s the car’s ability to utilise the power effectively which is hampered primarily by a dated and slow to react four-speed automatic.

Although the transmission is very smooth of shift it is reluctant to kick-down in a timely manner meaning overtaking opportunities need to be a long planned affair. But should you intend a more leisurely, city-based role for your own Corolla Ultima this may not prove such an issue.

The ride is above average, comfortably settled yet not so firm as to be bothersome, and despite the torsion beam rear end (strut front), the Corolla Ultima manages fairly confident handling that is now assisted by ESP (or VSC in Toyota terms).

Add to this dual front, side, curtain and a driver’s knee airbag, as well as ABS with EBA and EBD, then it is a given the Corolla Ultima will achieve maximum points when next ANCAP tested (Corolla has not yet been tested with ESP – previous model scored 34.96 out of a possible 37 points to achieve five-stars).

Light but true steering feel somehow offers the driver an unremarkable level of feedback from the front wheels once at highway speeds while contrarily braking is sure and progressive with fade evident only after repeated excessive application.

An ample boot allows 450-litres of cargo to be carried with the seats up though this can be nearly doubled thanks to a 60:40 split fold back seat. The boot also houses a full-size (steel) spare wheel under the floor.

So while it may not get your heart racing in terms of looks or performance the Corolla Ultima is a pleasant and smooth drive with enough in the way of comfort and kit to keep you abreast of modern small-sedan motoring.

Were it a little cheaper the Corolla Ultima would have scored higher in our ratings but with Korea’s top-shelf rivals offering the same level of spec’ for much less coin it’s a worthy 3.5 wheels.
