Toyota HiLux WorkMate model upgrade

Already leading the race in new vehicle sales year-to-date, Toyota is now rolling out the new member of the HiLux family, the WorkMate, for the first time with automatic transmission. The new WorkMate single cab and double cab automatic models take the HiLux 4×2 range to 16 models and will no doubt strengthen Toyota’s strong sales record.

Toyota is definitely doing something right, offering just what car buyers are after, FCAI figures show the company retained the top sales position in September with a market share of 22.4 percent, well ahead of Holden on 13.1 per cent and Ford with 11.0 per cent.

Toyota wins economy marathon

A Toyota Yaris driven by Andrew Andersz and Gary Luton achieved the highest overall fuel economy in the 2008 ALD Fleet World MPG Marathon.

Seeing off stiff competition and winning Toyota top spot for the third year running, the unmodified Yaris 1.4-litre petrol achieved 84.66 mpg (2.77 litres per 100km), the highest figure attained out of all the 39 vehicles which took part in the 400-mile challenge last week.

Having been available in the US for some time now, Camry will soon be available in RHD (right hand drive) and will be the first Australian produced hybrid vehicle.

Toyota gets tough on counterfeit parts

Toyota Australia has sent a warning to all repair workshops across the country warning that selling and fitting counterfeit parts is putting their businesses at risk.

Evidence suggests some workshops have been illegally importing counterfeit parts (these differ from non-genuine parts as they are branded with the Toyota logo) which can be sourced at fraction of the cost of the genuine article to try and boost profits at shop level.

Subaru & Toyota join the electric-car race

Yesterday we were talking about Toyota’s concern about the new Chevrolet Volt, but news from Japan today has revealed that the big T and partner company Subaru have announced plans to join the electric vehicle race.

Toyota, which owns a significant share in Fuji Heavy Industries, Subaru’s owner, has for the first time confirmed plans for its own battery-powered-only car to be released in the early 2010s. Meanwhile, Subaru is slightly ahead having announced fleet sales of a four-seat electric car starting next year.

Toyota’s rise to fame with hyrbid technology is one which has been questioned repeatedly. From claims the technology was stolen, a CNW Marketing/Research which found that the popular hybrid was less environmentally friendly than a Hummer H2, or even allegations the Japanese government funded the Prius. The list goes on and on and it’s clear that controversy is never far from Toyota’s hybrid program.

So today we can add yet another controversy to the list. With GM and the rest of the industry catching up to the Big T in terms of hybrid technology, Toyota is showing early signs of panic.

Toyota Australia has announced today it will bring a glimpse of its future hybrid cars to Australia with the unveiling of the Hybrid X concept car at this year’s Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.
