A new report from 7Tune suggests Subaru may abandon plans to create an AWD version of its FT-86 model.

The FT-86, a co-developed two-door sports coupe between Toyota and Subaru, was supposed to be offered in RWD for Toyota and AWD for Subaru. But with costs escalating, Subaru may have to ditch these plans meaning both manufacturers could offer RWD only varaints.

Now several months into development, a source within the company told 7Tune Subaru have discovered the costs required to modify the FT-86 platform for AWD are “too great” and the feasibility of continuing with a separate model is “simply not practical”.

Should Subaru have to offer the same RWD model as Toyota there will be very little difference between the two manufacturer’s mechanical package, with both models already reported to share a 149kW 2.0-litre Subaru boxer engine.

For now, sources say Subaru will instead focus of a “thorough re-working of the vehicle’s exterior design” in an attempt to differentiate its variant from that of the Toyota.

Seems as though Toyota’s inclination to stick with its hybrid strategy has affected Subaru (which Toyota partially owns) with reports that the Japanese based company will bring out a hybrid version of the Subaru Impreza when the new model comes out in 2012.

Although previous suggestions of a hybrid car were thought to be for the Subaru Liberty, Road & Track’s Sam Mitani said Subaru insiders have suggested it will first be seen on the all-new Impreza.

The news should not come as a surprise given Ikuo Mori, president of Subaru, recently declared that his company will introduce a new hybrid vehicle in 2012. Given the Impreza’s size and popularity it’s certainly the right choice to start with.

With a diesel now in the lineup, Subaru is a brand on the move. A hybrid drivetrain based on the company’s boxer engine could be a very interesting idea and can potentially produce much better results than similar systems found in Toyota hybrids.

Even if a Subaru Impreza Hybrid does come out in 2012, it may not necessarily come to Australia straight away.

Would you consider an Impreza Hybrid?

Well you’ve all asked for it and Subrau has listened, after the success of the Subaru Outback Diesel, the Japanese giant has decided to add diesel to the one of the best SUVs on the market. The Subaru Forester will soon be available with the world’s first boxer diesel engine.

The Subaru Forester diesel range will consist of two variants, Forester 2.0D and 2.0D Premium. Both variants will be available in early June.

The traditionally symmetrical all-wheel drive Forester diesel will increase the appeal of the company’s SUV range by attracting a whole new range of buyers.

“Given the level of customer enquiry so far, we anticipate substantial demand for Forester diesels. We expect supply to be quite tight and on that basis our network is now taking orders, to avoid customer disappointment. We thank customers for their patience and based on the huge response we’ve had to our Outback diesels, we’re gearing up for significant orders.” Nick Senior, Subaru Managing Director, said:

The Subaru Forester Diesel’s 2.0-litre turbocharged engine will pump out 110 Kilowatts of power at 3600 rpm and 350 Newtonmetres of torque between 1800 and 2400 rpm.

Unfortunately the Forester diesel suffers the same issue as the Outback diesel, being only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

The entry model in to the Subaru Forester diesel range will come standard with cloth trim, 16-inch alloy wheels, leather gear shift, front fog lights, climate control air conditioning, self-levelling rear suspension, a flip-out rear tray and colour-coordinated door handles.

Those going for the range-topper Forester 2.0D Premium will gain 17-inch alloy wheels, leather trim, power driver’s seat, upgraded audio, HID headlights and a sunroof.

As with the entire Subaru range, the Forester Diesel will carry a five-star crashworthiness rating for occupant safety from the independent Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

Part of that safety system includes standard vehicle dynamics control, stability system plus dual front, side and curtain airbags.

Subaru Australia is yet to announce pricing but we suspect it will incur a $2,000 premium over the equivelant petrol variant.

The new Subaru Impreza XV, previously known as the Subaru Imprza RV has just been unveiled at this year’s Geneva Motorshow.

The newest addition to the Impreza range will fill the hole left by the RV by providing agile road performance with the recreational styling.

The Subaru Impreza XV is already confirmed for Australia with a release date scheduled for the third quarter of this year.

The model will be powered by the same 2.0 litre four-cylinder horizontally opposed Boxer engine currently used in the Impreza R, RX and RS models.

Subaru Australia says all local XV variants will be tuned for local conditions, for example the Australian delivered XVs sit higher than the European specification cars currently shown in Geneva.

To differentiate the Impreza XV from the standard models there are unique wheel arch extensions, roof rails, grille, and interior trim.

“This is an exciting model for us because it will broaden our appeal, particularly with younger audiences looking for a car that combines fun and safety. The current generation Impreza is the best seller of any to date and we’re confident that Impreza XV will add to that success, given the earlier achievements of recreation-themed versions of the car.” Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia said.

No current pricing or specification for Australian models is available. Subaru Australia says details for the Impreza XV will be announced at a later date.

If the idea of a family wagon with enough room for the kids, the dog and all your gear has long been on the wish list, but soaring fuel prices have held you back, then this is the Outback you’ve been waiting for.

As Subaru’s first foray in to the diesel market, in Australia at least, the new Outback’s Boxer Diesel engine has clearly been worth the wait.

Proving just how far oil burning technology has come, the gutsy 2.0-litre unit offers quiet, smooth power delivery and gutsy pulling power that, coupled with Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system, is just as kind on the driver as it is on your wallet.

Spending a week with the Outback Diesel, I was quick to head for the winding country back roads of Victoria’s picturesque Yarra Valley to see just how well the 2.0-litre common rail turbo-diesel would deal with real world driving conditions.

The stop-start traffic heading out of the city didn’t seem to phase the new Boxer Diesel with more than enough pep seeing it keep with – or even ahead of – traffic. The turbo comes on strong from just over 1,800rpm, and when driven correctly, presents little in the way of lag.

Gear changes are a little on the notchy side, and some might find the clutch a little tightly sprung, but if you can live with this – and with no automatic option you’ll have to – then you’ll find the well matched six-speed gearbox does the engine a lot of justice, and keeps the revs down nice and low when cruising at highway speeds – perfect for screwing down that all-important fuel economy.

Once out in the hills the new Outback Diesel is quick to prove just how strong and capable it is. Torque is seamless, always ready, and impressively strong. Most hills are conquered without even considering a gear change, and when it comes to overtaking, the Outback Diesel is confident and effortless.

Cornering sees Outback Diesel make the most of it’s AWD grip and although there’s a little tyre howl at higher speeds, the big wagon remains stable, tenacious, and almost sporty in its dynamics – not bad considering its 213mm ride height.

The ride is comfortable, relaxed and cabin noise surprisingly quiet with next-to-no engine noise and just a hint of wind noise noticeable from the larger wing mirrors.

But perhaps the best indicator of the Outback Diesel’s achievements are to be found in the fuel economy gains achieved from this impressive engine. Without even trying to save fuel I managed an impressive 1,100 kilometres from the 65-litre fuel tank this week (or 5.90L/100km). It’s a considerable effort from a car weighing in at over 1,500 kilograms and running all wheel-drive, and given how strong the performance credentials are, you’ll not be left wanting in any department – even inside.

The spacious cabin is quiet and well equipped, especially on the Premium variant on test this week. The leather-clad seating is comfortable, though not altogether supportive, and is electrically adjustable (with two memory positions) in all the usual directions. An impressive feature list sees Outback Diesel Premium fitted with satellite navigation, cruise control, dual-zone climate control, six CD tuner, power windows and mirrors as well as dusk sensing headlamps and remote central locking.

For those wanting to use the Outback Diesel in its environmental namesake, powerful and brilliantly clear high beam vision will come as a welcome feature.

Ample storage abounds throughout with a decent centre console bin, large glovebox and deep door pockets all on hand to swallow your odds and ends. Rear seat legroom is also a strong point with enough room to comfortably seat two, maybe even three adults.

Up back the Outback Diesel offers 490-litres of cargo space (seats up, to window height) that can be expanded to a cavernous 1,690-litres all told. The rear seat also offering 60:40 split for added versatility. Should you need to haul a little extra, the Outback Diesel also has a 1,700 kilogram braked towing capacity – a weight I’d imagine would be no drama for this impressive engine.

Safety comes compliments of the usual electronic helpers including ABS braking with electronic brake-force distribution, ESC and Traction Control. A full compliment of airbags are also included as standard, while the electronic park brake features a hill-start function, an especially handy, clutch-friendly addition when carrying a lot of weight.

All seating positions feature three-point inertia reel seatbelts with the front pews gaining pyrotechnic pretensioners and anti-whiplash headrests. The Subaru Outback Diesel holds a maximum possible five-star ANCAP safety rating.

Sure, the looks aren’t for everyone, but without offending our photographer, I hasten to add that this is one car that really does look a lot better in the third dimension.

If you’re up for a full-size wagon with light-hatch fuel economy then look no further. The Outback Diesel is a great drive, an impressive package, and starting from $40,490*, great value.

The Impreza N2010 from Prodrive is its latest FIA specification group N rally car.
Now using a larger 33mm air restrictor which was introduced by the FIA and helps balance the performance of Group N as well as the unrestricted Super2000 rally cars. Peak power has increased by 15kW by increasing the restrictor from 32 to 33 mm as well as fitting high flow fuel injectors and re-calibrating the ECU. Torque has improved as well as responsiveness throughout the rev range.

With the improvements to engine performance comes improvements to the car’s dynamics. Suspension bushes have been strengthened and the dampers have extra travel front and rear.

“The engine and suspension changes make the N2010 far more competitive,” said Graham Prew, Prodrive sales manager. “On gravel the Impreza is certainly a match for any Super 2000, but it is on tarmac, that the additional engine performance will really come into its own and make the N2010 a competitive alternative to a Super 2000, but at about half the price and with significantly lower running costs.”

With prices starting at $214,770 Prodrive now offer a financing option allowing the car to be leased over two years with the option to buy the car at the end of the lease. The leasing option also include insurance and system rebuilds.

Remember when a six-seater meant two vinyl bench seats, ventilation via the outboard passenger’s armpit and a frontal shiatsu massage from Dad’s elbow every time he changed gears? I know I do, and if our school holidays were anything to go by, the Subaru Liberty Exiga would have come as a god-send.

The latest people mover to join an increasingly busy market segment, Subaru’s Liberty Exiga features three rows of two — a move necessary to score a five-star ANCAP rating due to the seven-seat model’s centre lap belt — allowing more than enough space to spread out, even for lanky teens.

A standard remote-controlled, roof-mounted DVD player with (2) wireless Bluetooth headphones ensures the kids are kept occupied, while up front, mum and dad are left in peace to enjoy comfortable captain’s chair-style seating, a six-CD tuner and dual-zone climate control.

The base-model Liberty Exiga, as tested this week, also included cruise control, front fog lamps, power windows and mirrors and remote central locking as standard kit, but on the downside offered no Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, trip computer, auxiliary audio input, reverse parking sensors or reversing camera – most of which are reserved for the top-shelf Libery Exiga Premium.

The only other let down to Liberty Exiga’s otherwise practical and roomy design is the abundance of uncovered storage areas, especially through the centre console, lack of second- and third-row ventilation outlets and small wing mirrors that make lane changing a little trickier than it otherwise needs to be.

With versatile seating for six – all with three-point seatbelts – the Liberty Exiga’s seating arrangements are both flexible and simple to use with a nearly endless combination of seats and cargo space to suit just about any need. The large cargo area allows between 195- and 460-litres of space (between four- and six-seat mode) with that area almost tripled when both rows of seats are folded flat.

Again the only issue to plague the Liberty Exiga back here is security, with no standard cargo blind available. A 12-volt outlet is positioned on the right-hand side of the cargo area to power the fridge or airbed compressor. Seatbelts tuck neatly out of the way in side-mounted clips so as not to tangle your gear when unloading the boot.

On the open road the Liberty Exiga is a quiet achiever scoring a decibel reading of just 74dB at 100km/h. There’s a little wind noise around the ‘B’ pillar, but otherwise the cabin acoustics are very pleasant with only a dull hum from the CVT and Boxer engine under acceleration.

The 2.5-litre engine is mated perfectly to a six-ratio, continuously variable transmission (CVT) for smooth acceleration and reasonably prompt changes under varied throttle pressure. The CVT also helps Liberty Exiga feel more gutsy than the on-paper specs would have you believe (123kW/229Nm) with brisk acceleration possible even when fully loaded. 0-100km/h is managed in under 11 seconds.

Steering wheel mounted paddle-shifts allow even more control over the CVT when so required, with the floor-shift also allowing +/- functionality. Access to the gearshift is also easy with the park brake moved to the floor (foot operated) and front cup holders placed in the door. Second row passengers score a neat flip up set of cup holders positioned in the rear of the centre console.

Braking is sharp with a positive pedal feel ensuring a confident stop. Liberty Exiga features disc brakes all round with ABS, EBA and EBD for added peace of mind.

With a tall, narrow body and softer suspension Liberty Exiga does present a fair amount of body roll through hard corners, especially when fully loaded. The large slab sides also make the car a bit of a windsock on gusty days. But despite all this the Liberty Exiga’s cornering grip is relentless, with the ESC system not required once in our week of driving – even in very wet weather – Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive system making sure the car feels steady underfoot.

Speedometer error also scored a mention this week though fortunately it’s on the driver’s side of the battle registering 94km/h when indicating 100. Curiously the car needed to be travelling at an indicated 112km/h before 100km/h (actual) was attained. At least you won’t get booked!

The Liberty Exiga is a welcomed addition to the people mover category and provides spacious versatility from a car no larger than the average station wagon. It’s a clever package, great value for money and one car that is certain to prove popular with those wanting six-seat capacity without the drawbacks associated with larger SUV ownership and running costs.

I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t really like the previous generation Subaru Liberty. It was slow and there was bugger all rear leg room, not to mention the design, which was confused at the best of times.

It’s no wonder I came into this road test somewhat pessimistic about the new Subaru Liberty, especially considering I was in the base model with no options ticked (aside from the automatic gearbox).

Let’s be frank, we all shuddered slightly when images of the new Liberty were leaked on the ‘net prior to the vehicle’s release. Awkward headlights and a boring rear seemed to be the best Subaru could conjure.

But, when you approach the new Liberty in person, you instantly begin eating your hat. The design is actually really attractive, as are the proportions and stance. The sweeping headlights, sporty body kit and defined grille give the Liberty a sporty edge you wouldn’t expect from a car competing with the Camry, Mazda6 and Mondeo.

Open the driver’s door and jump into the cabin to find an alarming amount of leg and head room – just what has the Liberty become?

Rear seat passengers now have Commodore-esque leg room in comparison to the outgoing Liberty, in addition to a comfortable amount of head and shoulder room, especially for taller adults.

The dark interior is offset by light coloured beige plastics that grace the doors, dashboard and centre console area. The most engaging part of the cabin is the steering wheel, which is comfortable to grab hold of and small enough to man-handle the car when required. The steering wheel is also fitted with paddle shifters that move with the steering wheel and allow up to six instant ratio changes.

Interior build quality and feel of materials is a big step up from some of the other Subaru products. The plastic materials don’t feel as nasty as the outgoing Liberty and give the car an up market feel.

As the entry level model, the 2.5i is packed with features. The $33,990 price tag places it lineball against the Mazda6 Classic, Camry Sportivo and Mondeo Zetec. Standard features include: Fog lights, dual zone climate control, six-disc CD-player, 17-inch alloy wheels, trip computer, electric windows, electric mirrors, hydraulic emergency brake, cruise control, steering wheel audio controls, privacy glass, six-speaker sound system and auxiliary audio jack.

In addition to all-wheel-drive being standard across the entire Subaru range, the Liberty comes with: Electronic Stability Control (ESC), ABS brakes, BA, EBD, dual front passenger SRS airbags, dual front passenger side airbags, dual full length passenger curtain airbags, driver knee airbag, three child anchor points, engine immobiliser and datadot security.

The characteristic Subaru boxer engine rumble can be felt and heard immediately from startup. The 2.5-litre flat four-cylinder engine produces 123kW and 229Nm of torque. While this might not sound like much, our test vehicle was fitted with a Continually Variable Transmission (CVT) that allows the driver to extract the most out of the engine.

The infinitely variable gear ratios mean more time is spent in peak power and torque zones. The near instant bursts of power result in effortless overtaking and get-up-and-go from the traffic lights. The most appealing part of the boxer engine configuration is the engine note. It’s unlike any of its other four-cylinder competitors and leaves you with a smile after each stab of the throttle.

Subaru is renowned for its Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, featured throughout its entire range. While the Liberty’s suspension setup caters more toward comfort than handling, the all-wheel-drive system removes the uncertainty its competitors possess with a front-wheel-drive setup.

You will seldom run into an occasion where you have overpowered the Subaru and grip is compromised, even in the wet – where something like the Camry can sometimes begin to get stressed when a touch of the throttle is added to a tight corner. The Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system works seamlessly with the driver’s commands and is at its best under throttle out of a corner.

The 476 litre cargo capacity and 1500kg braked towing capacity make the Subaru Liberty a realistic option for family buyers. After spending more than 1200km behind the wheel, both alone and with a car load of passengers, the Liberty remained confident even during maneuvers such as overtakes and cornering.

The combined ADR fuel consumption figure is 8.9L/100km. On test, I managed to get the figure down to 7.5L/100km with a skew toward highway driving. It’s great to see fuel efficiency doesn’t come at the cost of power or driving comfort.

I never thought I’d hear myself saying this but I would highly recommend the Subaru Liberty. In fact, I would recommend it over the local and European competition. It drives better than the Mondeo, Mazda6 and Camry, but still manages to feel adequately powerful and luxurious, all for under $40,000.

The Subaru Liberty has transformed from its former self and is now an attractive proposition for those who want a family car the size of a Falcon or Commodore, but don’t want the fuel use to match.

Subaru Tecnica International (STI) has today launched a special performance edition of its Impreza WRX STI dubbed “R205” for sale in Japan only.

Based on the Impreza WRX STI, the R205, “R” standing for Road Sport, enhances the already impressing performance of the STI with new and exclusive equipment specially designed for the WRX STI spec C, the sporty performance model launched in 2009.

Most of the car’s modifications are focused on refining handling performance by adopting STI tuned dampers, coil springs, flexible type strut tower bar, flexible type lower arm stiffener of front suspension, and Bridgestone’s specially designed RE070 tyres. STI claim the R205 to be “ideally balanced” with “agile and confident driveability”.

STI carried out verification tests of selected performance parts of the R205 through the participation of the 2009 Nurburgring 24-hour race with an Impreza WRX STI. Making full use of this precious race-track experience at Nurburgring STI successfully completed the model in order to offer sheer excitement and unique driving feeling as a distinctive “Road Sport” model.

The R205 delivers 235kW of power and 431Nm of torque by adopting the exclusively designed turbocharger with ball bearings for the turbine axle bearing, specially tuned ECU (Engine Control Unit), and the sport muffler with lowered back pressure exhaust. SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent Drive) is also available to neatly suit driving style in any driving situation at driver’s command.

The front under spoiler, newly developed rear under spoiler, and the black rear spoiler improve aerodynamics. Exclusively designed 18-inch alloy wheels, specially colored front grille and side STI garnish accentuate its uniqueness.

A limited run of just 400 units will be sold in Japan only.

Subaru’s Forester model has taken the honours of Australia’s best-selling SUV across all categories, according to official VFACTS figures released yesterday.

In a market down 7.4 per cent for the year, Subaru’s range dropped just 5.2 per cent – and Impreza achieved its best-ever annual sales, of 12,268 units.

Among the highlights, combined Forester and Outback sales again dominated the SUV compact segment, with a 20.7 per cent market share for the year.

Forester sold 13,753 in 2009 and Outback 3716, with the latter performing strongly in the last quarter following the introduction of award-winning new generation versions. December Outback sales of 493 were 154.1 per cent up on December 2008.

Impreza grew its share of the Small Car segment from 5.3 per cent in 2008 to 5.9 per cent in 2009, retailing 12,268.

Liberty sales of 5548 also reflected strong interest in the new generation car in the last three months – 719 December sales were up 89.2 per cent on December 2008.

Tribeca sales of 1221 in 2009 included 138 in December, up 45.3 per cent for the month.

“A year ago it wouldn’t be an understatement to say the outlook was bleak, but it’s pleasing to be in the situation we are in today,” said Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia.

“The strength of the retail network and our value-for-money proposition have been critical to this success, combined with our clear difference in the marketplace, represented by Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and our boxer engines.

“We are delighted by Forester’s ongoing popularity, dominating not only the SUV compact category, but every SUV category overall.

“Impreza has achieved a new annual sales record and there has been strong acceptance of our new Liberty and Outback models, including our first diesel, the Outback 2.0D.

“We now look forward to building on our strong foundations in 2010, with some exciting new models and initiatives.”

The discounted price comes as Subaru applies the Federal Government’s full tariff reduction to the variant.

Prior to the recent limited driveaway offer, Impreza R manual had a recommended retail driveaway price that varied between $26,400 and $27,164, depending upon retailer and state or territory location.

“We are clearly applying the Federal Government’s duty reduction in two ways: via increased equipment and specification levels on our newest models, including Liberty and Outback, and through tactical driveaway pricing programs, such as with Impreza R models,” said Mr Nick Senior, Managing Director of Subaru Australia.

“In the case of new generation Liberty and Outback, we also managed to maintain or reduce recommended prices of most variants. This is despite the incredible currency pressures of the past 12-18 months.”

“I was really nervous all day long, but when I got in the car I felt really calm,” said Pastrana. “It was definitely a lot more fun than any of my practice runs, and when I landed, man did that retaining wall come up fast! I’m just happy the car and I didn’t end up in the drink. What a way to head into 2010!”

The jump was held at Red Bull’s New Year’s No Limits show. Check the video below for how it went. Oh, and watch the slide into the wall.

The 2010 Ward’s 10 Best Engines winners have been announced with efficiency and downsizing the winning themes.

In North America’s only award program honouring engine excellence, the list of 10 symbolises the automotive industry’s swift movement towards smaller engines and greater technological advancements.

Among the winners were two hybrid systems, two diesels, six four-cylinder units, and just one V8.

The winners were selected from a group of 34 vehicles from 10 manufacturers, with six editors awarding points based on power, torque, refinement, technical relevance and comparative data.

Each engine was evaluated because it was all-new, offered significant technology upgrades or was a returning winner from last year.

Five new powertrains joined this year’s list:

2.0-litre TFSI Turbocharged DOHC inline 4 (tested in Audi A4)

3.0-litre TFSI Supercharged DOHC V6 (Audi S4)

3.0-litre DOHC inline 6 Turbodiesel (BMW 335d)

2.5-litre DOHC inline 4 Hybrid (Ford Fusion Hybrid)

3.5-litre EcoBoost Turbocharged DOHC V6 (Ford Taurus SHO)

2.4-litre Ecotec DOHC inline4 (Chevrolet Equinox)

4.6-litre Tau DOHC V8 (Hyundai Genesis)

2.5-litre Turbocharged DOHC boxer 4 (Subaru Legacy 2.5GT)

1.8-litre DOHC inline 4 Hybrid (Toyota Prius)

2.0-litre SOHC inline 4 Turbodiesel (Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen TDI)

Ward’s AutoWorld Editor-in-Chief, Drew Winter, said the winners list was among the most impressive and relevant he had seen.

“This year’s list epitomises how the industry is responding to demands for higher fuel economy and lower emissions without short-changing performance.

“Auto makers are using innovative designs and advanced technology to boost horsepower and torque while downsizing engines and increasing efficiency,” he said.

New to the 2010 list is Audi 3.0-litre supercharged TFSI V6, the S4 a previous winner on three occasions in V8 form.

The new V6 packs 248kW while achieving 9.8 litres/100km during testing.

Ford’s EcoBoost V6 – the sibling of the four-cylinder unit that will power the Falcon from 2011 – similarly achieved V8-style performance (272kW) at 11.7 litres/100km.

The only V8 on the list was Hyundai’s 4.6-litre unit in the Genesis, the first time just one V8 has been honoured.

The Ward’s 10 Best Engines competition has been held annually for 16 years, and four V8s made the list in both 1997 and 1999.

In a sign of the times, Subaru’s boxer and the new Toyota Prius powertrain rounded out the new winners.

“Not since the dawn of the automobile has there been such a diverse array of compelling and affordable powertrains for mainstream vehicles,” Winter said.

“In coming years, we will be testing extended-range electric vehicles, pure electric vehicles, diesel-electric hybrids and numerous other types of powertrains.

“So much so that we likely will have to soon change the name of the Ward’s 10 Best Engines to Ward’s 10 Best Powertrains.”

If you’re wondering where Ferrari and Lamborghini are, to be eligible for the competition each engine must be available in a regular-production US-specification model on sale no later than first quarter 2010, in a vehicle priced no more than US$54,000 (around AUD$60,000).

The awards will be presented at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 13.

If we were playing that word association game, the words outback and comfort are hardly a winning combination – unless of course you’re talking about the Subaru Outback.

The Subaru Outback brings a serious level of comfort to the table, making this the kind of ‘outback’ experience I could easily come to terms with.

Somewhere between a wagon and an SUV, the Subaru Outback resembles a compact SUV, and plays in a segment that is home to some very strong competition. Starting with its own sibling, the Subaru Forrester is one of the top selling vehicles in this segment – then there’s Toyota’s RAV4, the Hyundai Tucson and the Mitsubishi Outlander.

Our test Outback runs a 2.5-litre horizontally-opposed boxer engine with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). We tested the petrol model, producing 123kW at 6000rpm and 229Nm at 4400rpm. The Outback has access to a nice amount of power, however the CVT produces a less than inspiring drone as it’s called to task. It takes some getting used to the whine from engine as you call upon some power. It delivers, but the engine noise does the overall ride experience no favours.

The 2.5i Outback is also available with a six-speed manual. A 3.6-litre engine is also available, fitted with a five-speed sportshift (automatic) only.

On our test route, the Outback delivered good fuel economy, with an average fuel consumption of 8.5L/100km on a combined route.

The Outback’s all-wheel-drive system delivers a solid and very composed drive experience, you feel glued to the road.

Acceleration from stand still is very good, quick to respond, and when you call for more power at cruising speeds the Outback delivers.

Gear changes from the auto transmission are a little sluggish, however using the paddleshifts – which seem quit the anomaly in the Outback – delivers a whole different result. Flipping through the paddles – which are standard on all automatic models – produces fast gear changes and I find myself enjoying the drive experience a whole lot more. The paddles move in tandem with the steering wheel for greater ease of use.

While the Outback is very easy to manouvre, the Outback’s steering is a little bit vague and offers minimal feedback. As a result, the handling and overall drive experience lacks a level of engagement that would otherwise make this ride very enjoyable.

The ride of the Outback is composed and the suspension is great, however engine noise can be a little intrusive at times.

The Outback runs a ride height of 213mm which makes it fairly well prepared should you actually take this car into the outback.

Bigger than its predecessor (65 mm longer, 50 mm wider and 70 mm higher) the 2009 Outback boasts considerable proportions – 4730mm in length and 1770mm wide – and offers and abundance of space, for people and cargo. The downside to its growing proportions, however, is a rather slab-like appearance. The Outback lacks styling detail and the character that other Subaru models and competitors offer.

At 459 litres seats up the Outback’s cargo capacity is huge. Add to this the versatility that comes with split fold seats, which increases the cargo space to 1628 litres and there’s not much you couldn’t load into the Outback. Sporty, active or just generally gear-laden buyers will be mad for this space.

The dash and centre console of the Outback are very busy, which is indicative of the many bells and whistles that come as standard in this Premium spec vehicle, which include an electric sunroof and leather trim, cruise control, satellite navigation, bluetooth, DVD/CD player, reversing camera and auxiliary input.

The Outback’s interior is very well executed and offers a level of pomp and sophistication you would expect in a more expensive car. Soft curves frame the dash and centre console which combine high quality leather and plastic finishes. The eight-inch screen provides a clear visual for both the satellite navigation and reversing camera. Cabin ergonomics are very good, with a very comfortable driving position thanks to good adjustability of the seat – eight way adjustable – and tilt and reach adjust for the steering column.

Second row passengers are greeted with a big, comfortable space which easily accommodates three adults. Leg, shoulder and headroom are more than generous. In cabin storage is also great.

With safety features such as seven airbags, including driver’s knee airbag, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and stability control the Subaru Outback gains a five-star ANCAP rating.

The Subaru Outback is one of those cars that delivers on its promise. It’s a great choice family wagon that can hold its own in the suburbs, while also boasting off road capability. And it does all of this without compromising space, comfort or practicality. Its price tag is fitting for the overall package. It is a definite step up from some of the more drab wagons on the market, and offers an alternative to your typical compact SUV line-up.

Subaru’s hero car the Impreza WRX has passed 30,000 sales in Australia.

The WRX is a turbocharged Symmetrical All Wheel Drive model from the Impreza family also known as “Rex”. Launched in March 1994 it changed the Australian automotive market and the perception of what a fast car should have under the bonnet. 15 years on it still sells for the same price – $39,990.

Given its credentials it didn’t take long before it had a cult following with buyers enjoying the raw performance and grip. When it was launched it had a similar effect as the Nissan GT-R with performance cars retailing for significantly higher prices unable to compete with the value for money.

“The dawn of Impreza WRX is an amazing milestone in our history,” said Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior.

“Just like the Subaru Forester and Outback, it effectively established a new class of vehicle, one that many have now followed.

“It paved the way for the low-volume and even more potent WRX STI versions, that have become the closest thing to a professional rally car at an accessible price.”

“It’s amazing to see that the Impreza WRX price today is the same as what we offered at launch, yet there’s so much more specification, so in many ways the current car is even better value.”

The Impreza WRX is still a favorite in Australia selling around 150 cars a month.

“WRX has seen many competitors come and go in the last 15 years, but its intrinsic engineering, quality and sheer fun have made it a true survivor with a distinct place in Australia’s automotive history,” said Mr Senior.

“I have lost count of the number of supposed competitors built up as Rex challengers, but they couldn’t cut the mustard, particularly the front wheel drive and rear wheel drive pretenders who soon got lost in the dust.”

From 1996-2005 the Impreza WRX STI took Subaru to 10 consecutive Australian Rally Drivers’ Championships, and eight Manufactures’ Championships.

First seen at the 1993 Sydney Motor Show, the Imprezza WRX came with a 2.0 litre turbocharged four cylinder Boxer engine which produced 155kW at 6000rpm and 270Nm of torque at 4800rpm.

The currant Impreza WRX has a 2.5 litre turbocharged engine which produces 195kW at 6000rpm and 343Nm of torque at 4000rpm.

With technological improvements the WRX is not only more powerful it is also more fuel efficient with lower emissions.

Other changes now include:

0-100 km/h 5.3 seconds (6.5 in 1994)

17-inch wheels (15-inch in 1994)

Framed doors, for added rigidity and security

Dual front, side and curtain airbags

Electronic Throttle Control

VDC electronic stability control

Five-star ANCAP safety rating

Impreza WRX is a multiple award winner, including:

1998 – Impreza WRX: MOTOR Bang for your Bucks winner
1999 – Impreza WRX: MOTOR Bang for your Bucks winner
2000 – Impreza (including WRX): Wheels Car of the Year
2001 – Impreza WRX: Australia’s Best Car in the Sports Car Under $56,000 category
2002 – Impreza WRX STI: MOTOR Bang for your Bucks winner
2003 – Impreza WRX: Australia’s Best Sports Car Under $57,000 – an honour jointly shared with the Mazda RX8.
2004 – Impreza WRX: Australia’s Best Sports Car Under $57,000
2005 – Impreza WRX STI: MOTOR Bang for your Bucks winner
2009 – Impreza WRX: MOTOR Bang for your Bucks winner

Three weeks ago CarAdvice showed you renderings of what Subaru’s version of the FT-86 “Toybaru” sports car may look like, and the information about the car continues to trickle slowly out of Japan.

The latest news is that the Subaru will be around 50hp (37kW) more powerful than the FT-86, which could see the naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder producing close to 250hp (186kW).

It is believed Subaru will make an all-wheel drive version which is expected to be released in 2011, probably after the Toyota, greatly increasing its chances of coming down under.

The cars will share a six-speed manual gearbox but the Subaru is set to be slightly larger and more expensive in a deliberate ploy to keep the cars from competing directly against each other.

Both Toyota and Subaru are yet to commit to bringing their vehicles to Australia when production starts in late 2011.
