New car sales reach record highs

Logic should dictate that given the rising cost of petrol and increasing petrol prices, the Australian motor vehicle market would suffer, not so. Official VFACTS figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) indicate that 542,695 new cars, trucks and buses have found new owners in first six months of 2008.

 The figures are up 18,319 or 3.5 per cent over the same period last year and for those that remember, 2007 was the best year on record!

The Japanese brand, which stands for Luxury Exports United States has again won the UK J.D. Power and Associates customer satisfaction index. This is the eighth consecutive year for Lexus.

Despite the rising cost of petrol and recent rises in interest rates, official VFACTS figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show that a total of 84,061 cars, trucks and buses were sold in April, a 11.2 per cent increase on the same month last year.

So far 2008 looks to be another record year with year-to-date records showing the car market is up by 5.1 per cent over the same period last year.

2.5 million Toyotas built in Australia

Although most manufacturers try their best to make the milestone vehicles something special, in Toyota’s case, it was a white Toyota Camry Grande. The car marks 45 years after Toyota Australia built its first car.

So far Queensland has had the worst record with seven deaths, Western Australia has hit five, Victoria is currently sitting at four, Tasmania is three and the Northern Territory and South Australia have each recorded one. Amazingly, there has been no deaths on New South Wales or ACT roads.

According to a study published by the NRMA today, male drivers are marginally more likely to be distracted whilst driving than women.

NRMA questioned 1350 motorists and found that eight per cent of men admitted to crashing because of distractions, which ranged from reading a newspaper, adjusting the car stereo, listening to music, drinking a cold drink, eating, kissing or even chasing insects.
