It’s not often a new comer is treated with as much enthusiasm as Škoda, and so far the Czech brand’s arrival has been met with deserved praise for offering a thoroughly decent vehicle at a competitive price. I was therefore very keen to try it for myself and see if this new kid on the bloc (pun intended) was as good as I’d been led to believe.

Škoda has reached an epic milestone, having produced its two-millionth Škoda Octavia in Vrchlabí.

Whilst only a new entry into the Australian market, Škoda Auto is a well established manufacturer in its home nation of the Czech Republic.

New kid on the block Skoda has done well to present a wide variety of their somewhat limited range at this year’s show, safely tucked under the wing of VW’s mother stand.

Starring the Yeti concept vehicle (pictured), Roomster van, and classy Octavia sedan and wagon range the Skoda stand really is worth a look in, especially for prospective Volkswagen buyers who can’t quite stretch the budget.

I’m really grateful for pharmacies. Especially the ones you can go to late at night. It’s almost a godsend when you’ve got a screaming kid, only to find out that the Children’s Panadol has run out. So you trundle down at 11pm and find a (quiet) haven where you can ease your offspring’s pain.

But there’s another reason why I’m grateful to our local Chemist. A few years ago, they started stocking aromatic essences. It was seen as an unusual move for a pharmacy, but when people checked out the price tag (myself included) they started to come around. You see, a perfume that is the real deal, yet costs a heap less, is going to go down well in anyone’s books.

What’s the definition of cute? Ugly, but interesting.

Certainly by definition then, the new Skoda Roomster is cute. However it hasn’t had the warmest reception, judging by the responses we got in our week long test drive. Men were indifferent, but women, without exception, said it was ugly.

Are they justified? Well it’s certainly unusual. And it’s designed for that reason. But here’s the thing: Judging a book by its cover is a serious sin. Those who are critical will be the ones missing out.

2008 Skoda Superb preview

Skoda has released the first preview pictures of its upcoming Superb sedan, before its launch at  the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Using a Volkswagen Passat platform stretched by 50mm in the wheelbase, the new Superb should be a roomy, well-built alternative to other premium brands. Just over 4.8m in length, and nearly 1.8m wide, the interior space is said to be generous. Front-wheel-drive will help with packaging too.

Škoda Australia has just announced the next-generation ‘Superb’ - which is set for presentation at next year’s Geneva Motor Show - will be coming to Australia.

“I can hear you all mumbling to each other out there, who’d buy a Skoda? Me, especially the Octavia RS with the same engine as the Golf GTI”

The Czech Republic is surrounded by Germany, Austria, Poland and Slovakia and one thing it’s not known for, is great food. Stodgy dumplings and generally heavy fare, take top billing on the menu most nights.

What it does do well though, is build cars. Lots of them, and they all wear a Skoda badge.

Skoda Australian Launch

SkodaIt’s “Sch-koda”, not “Sco-da”; Australia’s newest car brand is about to launch at the Sydney International Motor Show. With it comes two models for the Australian market – the Roomster and the Octavia.

Skoda has been welcomed into the Volkswagen family and brings with it European quality and design at an affordable price.

Roomster:

Simply clever, that’s one way to describe the new Skoda Roomster. Available with two engines – a 1.6-litre petrol and 1.9-litre diesel – power is sent through a selection of 5-speed manual, 6-speed automatic.
