Peugeot’s new upscale brand known as hors-série will release three new models with the hope that it will attract well-off buyers and help boost profits. The new models will compliment the DS models from sister brand Citroen.

The premium brand line up is a new trend by manufacturers to help generate more revenue with higher margins, offering luxury niche models that use mass produced platforms.

Peugeot’s first hors-série model will be the RCZ coupe which is based on the 308 hatchback and built by contract manufacturer Magna Steyr in Austria.

Peugeot will use the French words hors-série in all markets without translation, it means built out of mass production. Peugeot will not be the first to use their own language as marketing slogans, Volkswagen use the German words Das Auto outside of Germany as its marketing slogan.

PSA/Peugeot-Citroen’s brand boss Jean-Marc Gales said PSA does not have low-cost models. We traditionally cover the mainstream area with the Citroen and Peugeot brands. The DS and hors-série car lines will expand our coverage into the more distinctive portion.”

The second hors-série model is due next year and will be a station wagon based on the model that will replace the 407 and 607, likely to be known as the 508. The sedan will be unveiled at the Paris auto show in October.

Gales was not forthcoming of details of the third hors-série model which is due out in 2012.

Citroen’s first DS model the DS3 was launched this month, the DS name comes was first used in 1955 and became an iconic brand for Citroen.

The DS3 is a three door upscale model of the five door C3. The DS4 is based on the new C4 and is due out early 2011. At the Geneva auto show Citroen unveiled the three door DS High Rider hybrid concept .

Rumours have it that the third model will be a crossover based on the C5 model and will be due in 2012.

Here are the first photos of the upcoming Peugeot 508 Kombi (or wagon).

From what we can see, the wagon seems to follow the manufacturer’s latest design trends with more sporty looks and a smaller exterior size.

We can also clearly see the LED rear lights with a unique design so far only seen on the 508 Kombi.

The 508 will be the successor to both the 407 and 607 and will feature a three car lineup. First to be released will be the Peugeot 508 sedan, followed by the 508 wagon and another later on, which rumour says will be a four-door coupe much like the Passat CC.

The 508 will also be the first Peugeot that will show the French company’s new design language.

A range of engine will be offered including petrol, diesel and diesel-hybrid, known as Hybrid4.

The first version of the Hybrid4 has a 121kW 2.0-litre HDi FAP engine linked to a 28kW electric motor. The combination produces 149kW, has an electric only mode and four-wheel drive when required. This system will make its first debut in the 3008 during 2011 but will soon follow to other models.

The Peugeot 508 is expected late 2011, possibly as a 2012 model year.

To co-incide with the Geneva Motor Show, Peugeot held an ECO Cup challenge, where 72 different drivers from 18 countries were invited to drive four different Peugeot cars. The brief was to see if they could beat the official government tested fuel consumption in real world conditions.

One thousand kilometres from Paris to Geneva was traversed, and all weather conditions were encountered, but the real question is not did they beat the official figures – we always knew they would – it’s by how much.

Australia’s ADR figure for the 308 1.6 HDi is 4.7-litres/100km. Breaking it down even further, the open-road figure (extra urban) is 4.1L/100km. On the ECO CUP challenge, the best average was just 2.6L/100km.

A staggering result and probably cooler European temperatures helped here, but it shows that hybrids still have a way to go yet when it comes to beating diesel on the open road.

And no, these cars weren’t modified in any way. They were straight off the production line.

Peugeot’s 3008, which is soon to be launched in Australia, also performed well, sipping 2.97L/100km, which means there’s plenty of scope for good fuel consumption with a bit of careful driving.

It seems the time has come for Peugeot Australia to gain more and more market share as it expands its Australian lineup. Apart from the Peugeot 4007 which has already been launched, the latest addition to the range is the Peugeot 3008 compact SUV which will make its first public appearance in Australia at this month’s Handa Women’s Australian Open golf championship in Melbourne.

The Peugeot 3008 will be launched later this year in May and features the best of both SUVs, family hatchbacks and MPVs. Having been launched in Europe last year, the Peugeot 3008 has won numerous awards such Car Of The Year for 2009 by British publication What Car? and the Auto Europa 2010 award.

The new Pug will come packed with the latest the French company has to offer, Grip Control, Dynamic Roll Control, Head-Up Display for the driver, Distance Alert, Automatic Electric Parking Brake and Hill Assist are just a few.

From the outside the 3008 follows on from the Peugeot design principle, taking inspiration from the 308 and 207 model range.

Australian buyers can pick between diesel or petrol variants with fuel economy figures as low as 5.6 litres per 100km combined for the manual 2.0-litre HDi diesel (146 grams/km CO2 emissions).

The Peugeot 3008 is safety rated at the maximum five stars with an array of airbags and active safety systems all standard. A brief demonstration of the systems in use can be seen below:

As with all Peugeots of late, the interior space is extremely flexible with its configuration, Peugeot says the 3008 offers a load capacity under the parcel shelf of 512 litres, or 1,604 litres when the rear seats are folded flat.

It has a huge rear load area that is extremely versatile thanks to its adjustable floor. Combined with the extra ride height and commanding driving position it offers an ideal proposition for almost any leisure activity.” Peugeot Automobiles Australia national marketing manager Richard Grant says

CarAdvice will soon bring you a review of the Peugeot 4007 and Peugeot 3008.

This will be of the first cars that will once and for all put an end to the debate about hybrids vs diesel as it’s, a hybrid diesel! It will have the best of the two worlds as it’s powered by Peugeot’s HYbrid4technology, which we will first see in Europe on the 3008 from 2011.

The power-train is similar in concept to petrol hybrids, but instead of a petrol engine, a 2.0-litre HDi diesel engine makes the Peugeot move. It produces 120 kW and powers the front wheels while a 27 kW electric motor drives the rear. This results in a total power output of 147 kW and an amazing fuel economy figure (given its size) of 3.8 litres of diesel per 100km. It also puts out just 99 g/km of CO2 emissions or 0 g/km when driven in all electric mode.

Similar to the Toyota Prius, the Peugeot 5 can run in full electric mode at low speeds. Peugeot says the 5 is a representation of its intent to amalgamate the “large saloon” (M2) and “luxury” (H) segments.

From the outside, it certainly is a looker, but that’s what we have come to expect from Peugeot lately.

5 BY PEUGEOT DIMENSIONS (mm)
Overall length 4,860
Overall body width 1,880
Kerb height – with full tanks 1,420
Wheelbase 2,815
Front/rear overhang 974/1,071
Front/rear track 1,643/1,614

Peugeot’s Hybrid4 technology lives under the bonnet giving the car 150kW of power that drives all four wheels and produces only 99 g/km of CO2 emissions or zero in electric mode.

The “5 by Peugeot” is a large luxury saloon which combines a modern look with quality and performance and reflects Peugeot’s search for more status without affecting the personality of the Peugeot Marque.

With smooth flowing exterior contours from the bonnet to the boot lid, the design of the front grill and headlights has been influenced by the Peugeot SR1 concept car with the new revised Lion badge at the front.

With 19-inch sculpted wheels, brushed aluminium window surrounds and door handles to enhance the streamlined sides of the car. The tail lights are designed in three seperate linked clusters which provide a link to previous models.

Peugeot’s Hybrid4 technology will be used on the 3008 due to be launched in 2011. A2.0 litre HDi FAP 122kW diesel engine drives the front wheels and a 28kW electric motor drives the rear wheels. With the ability to be driven slowly in electric mode the car has the potential of producing zero CO2 emissions.

The Hybrid4 technology can be combined with a range of engines to suite the market it is in and can also be fitted to different platforms and body shapes.

Last year was huge for Peugeot in China, selling over 410,000 vehicles – a massive 44% increase compared with its 2008 performance.

The company believes the new Peugeot DF 408 will give it the right kind of ammunition to increase its sales volumes in China by over 30% in 2010.

The 408 will be manufactured at the Wuhan plant in Hubei province in China with the first units expected to go on sale in the People’s Republic later this year. Peugeot Australia general manager / director Ken Thomas says although the 408 has not been officially confirmed for right-hand drive at this stage, he is confident that it will be in Australia in the not-too-distant future.

Earlier reports indicate the Peugeot 408 will be powered by two engines available across the range. a 1.6-liter 16V with 110 bhp and147 Nm as well as a 2.0-litre putting out 147 bhp and 200 Nm of torque.

As for the look and design, the 408 came to life as a collaboration between PSA Peugeot and the Chinese group DFM.

Some interesting features in the car include a fold-away 7-inch screen, Bluetooth support, USB connectivity, dashboard-mounted CD player with MP3 and WMA compatibility. It can also be optioned out with cruise control and bi-xenon headlights. Safety is also high on the agenda with the 408 available with 2 adaptive front airbags, 2 side airbags and 2 curtain airbags.

Due for release in Australia this year is the Peugeot 3008 and RCZ, and have both been successful in receiving awards.

The Peugeot RCZ coupe was named most Beautiful Car of 2009 at the International Automobile Festival and will arrive in Australia in the second half of the year.

The winner is chosen from the public votes, more than 65,000 votes worldwide were cast and the RCZ received 33 per cent of the votes. This is the fourth time Peugeot has won this award.

Peugeot’s RCZ received a huge amount of public praise when first seen at the last Frankfurt Motor Show, with its double bubble roof and rear window and the two aluminium arches helping it stand out in the crowd.

RCZ’s win comes after the 3008 SUV was named Car of the Year by the UK magazine What Car? Arriving in Australia in April this year the 3008 has had great success in Europe with sales 30 per cent above its target.

Peugeot’s clever 3008 combines a hatchback, MPV and SUV into one easy to live with package.

French vehicle manufacturer PSA Peugeot Citroen will recall close to 100,000 cars built in the same factory as the defective Toyota Aygo after experiencing the same accelerator-related problems.

Around 200,000 Peugeot 107 and Citroen C1 city cars are assembled each year mostly for the European market at the Toyota Peugeot Citroen Automobile plant in Kolin, 60km east of Prague, Czech Republic.

Developed by Toyota in the only PSA-Toyota joint venture, the cars wearing French badging are structurally very similar to the Aygo and need to be recalled to fix the same problem.

“For Peugeot 107s and Citroen C1s, we are going to carry out an identical campaign as Toyota,” a PSA spokesman said.

“We are at the investigation phase to establish which phase of production is concerned.” PSA is yet to announce when the recall will be launched and how many vehicles are affected.

As many as 1.8 million Toyota vehicles were recalled in Europe last Friday and included eight models with build dates ranging from February 2005 to January 2010.

The top-selling Yaris, along with the Auris, Avensis, Aygo, Corolla, iQ, RAV4, and Verso, are among the latest recall, taking the global tally to almost eight million vehicles. No Lexus models were included in the European recall, and as far as Toyota Europe is aware, no accidents have resulted from the accelerator problem.

Toyota production in Europe will not be suspended as it has already sourced different parts to combat the issue.

In 1810, Jean-Pierre and Jean-Frédéric Peugeot turned their father’s cereal mill into a steel foundry, taking the Peugeot family into the industrial era.

Today, 200 years later, a new chapter in the Peugeot story is being written with a further evolution of the brand as it enters its third century.

Last week CarAdvice showed you the SR1 Concept which previews Peugeot’s new design language, to be officially unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March.

Standing proudly on the bonnet was a new lion badge, which is set to debut on the new RCZ sports car in a few months time. Peugeot says it has been designed in-house and will become the focal point of every vehicle.

It is simpler and more dynamic with a stronger stance, and achieves greater fluidity with its new bi-metallic look through the use of both matt and polished finishes. It discards the blue flag background to give a more autonomous impression.

Some brands are very defensive of their badge, and refuse to change it throughout history.

Not Peugeot.

The Lion emblem was first conceived in 1847 when Jules and Emile Peugeot, who founded the company Peugeot Frères, asked Julien Blazer, a jeweller and engraver, to produce a logo for identifying all Peugeot products.

The chosen design was a Lion, as the characteristics of the lion were very similar to those of the saws the Peugeot brothers were producing: strong teeth like those of the lion, suppleness of the blade like the lion’s spine, and swiftness of cut like the lion pouncing on its prey.

The lion quickly became Peugeot’s sole registered trade mark, and could be found not only on tools and saw blades, but also on coffee grinders by 1881 (the production of which began in 1840), on bicycles from 1882 and, from 1898, on motorcycles.

Although the first Peugeot production car the Type 3, built by Armand Peugeot dates from 1891, it was only in 1906 that the emblem first appeared on a production car.

In 1910, the two entities (Peugeot Frères and Armand Peugeot) merged to become La Sté des automobiles et cycles Peugeot. The two product ranges, however, co-existed until the First World War.

The last car to display the “lion walking on an arrow” was the Bébé Lion (designed by Ettore Bugatti), presented at the Paris Motor Show in October 1912.

Subsequent models, however, used old-style lettering, on the top of the radiator grille contained inside a double “ellipse”, and in some instances with lettering also on the radiator, either on its own or in a coat of arms (from the 201).

In the 1920s the Lion became a rallying call for “Peugeotistes” who used it as a decoration on their radiator caps. Two types of radiator Lions were distributed in the network, a roaring version by the sculptor Marx and one ready to pounce by Baudichon.

For its part, Peugeot bicycles and motorcycles first used the lion “walking on an arrow” emblem against the background of a spoked wheel; later a fighting lion facing to the right was introduced in the 1920s and, finally, the same design but with upright lettering in 1960. Tools and domestic appliances opted for the lion “walking on an arrow” in a coat of arms or on an oval plaque for coffee grinders.

From October 1933, with the launch of the “aerodynamic” range of Peugeot vehicles 201, 301 and 601, a lion’s head re-appeared on the top of the radiator grille.

This design also appeared on the 401, first seen at the 1934 Paris Motor Show and with a tapered head design on the 402 (1935) then the 302 (1936) and the 202 in 1938.

In 1948, the 203 adopted as its figurehead a lion on the bonnet in a more prominent style. With the launch of the 403 in 1955 another new lion appeared on the bonnet, however, these two designs were deemed too dangerous in the event of a collision and soon disappeared in September 1958.

The launch of the 203 also marked the first appearance of the heraldic lion of Franche-Comté and the Duchy of Montbéliard.

It was attached to the boot lid until October 1952 and then migrated to the front of the bonnet from September 1958 until the end of the series in February 1960. During this period the heraldic lion also appeared on Peugeot motorcycles.

The same design of the lion was also placed in a small coat of arms in the centre of the radiator grille on the 403 range from April 1955 to 1966 before being replaced by a larger version, which first appeared on the Pininfarina styled 404, in May 1960.

It was then replaced by a lion (gilt or chrome-plated) leaping from its background, which first appeared in September 1968 on the 504, then was adopted by the 404, 204, 304 and 104.

Another generation, the lion “in outline” appeared on the 604 marketed in September 1975, and then extended to the 305 (November 1977) and 505 (May 1979) before being presented on a black background in 1982 on the 205, through to the 306 in 1993.

At its launch in October 1995, the 406 stood out with its large lion emblem which rapidly migrated across the entire “six” generation models. This led in 1998 to a new look lion, with a stylised, angular appearance that decorated the front and rear of both Peugeot cars and scooters.

Which brings us to today’s lion, on display in Geneva from March and in production on the RCZ from April.

After 152 years, the lion has now well and truly become universally recognised as the symbol of Peugeot.

(with Peugeot)

Peugeot has developed a new 1.6 litre HDi turbo diesel engine with 83kW and a maximum torque output of 270 Nm, an increase of 12.5 percent over the current engine. The 308 CC will be the first model offered with this engine.

The engine meets the new Euro five emission standards and has improved performance over the previous 82kW engine it replaces. Noise reduction, improved fuel consumption and lower CO2 emissions are all better than the out going engine.
Compared to the previous engine the new engine has more than 50 per cent of the parts redesigned and has Extreme Combustion Chamber System (ECCS) technology.

The new designed combustion chamber has a lower compression ratio (16 compared to 17.5), this creates more power with a reduction in emissions. The combustion chamber has increased by 10 per cent which helps reduce the amount of unburnt fuel. The pressure in the common rail injection system has been increased to 1,650 bars compared to 1600 bars previously, and new piezo-electric injectors with seven apertures which replace the solenoid injectors with six apertures.

Updated engine management software improves efficiency by improving the air/deisel mix for maximum performance and improved fuel efficiency. The turbo is smaller and has a lower inertia, this reduces response time to a minimum.
The new diesel engine will be available in the 308 CC in both Sport and SE trim and will be called the HDi 112.

Suzuki has announced today that it will end jointly development hybrid and fuel-cell technology projects with General Motors as part of an operational review following its new alliance with Volkswagen.

Suzuki and Volkswagen last month announced a comprehensive tie-up which, as of last week, saw VW become Suzuki’s largest single shareholder on 19.9 per cent. Cross-shareholding between the two companies is part of the pact.

Suzuki had relied on General Motors, once its top shareholder, for help in developing hybrid and fuel-cell technologies. Suzuki Chairman and CEO, Mr Osamu Suzuki, said that those projects with GM would end in February.

“Suzuki is in a comprehensive alliance with Volkswagen. In every field including hybrid, diesel and electric cars, we will carry out joint development with them, or we will learn from them,” said Mr Suzuki.

Mr Suzuki also said that Suzuki plans to procure diesel engines from VW and would review its ties with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen and Renault SA, which currently supply diesel engines to Suzuki.

UK motoring magazine What Car? has named the Peugeot 3008 1.6 THP 15 Sport its 2010 Car of the Year, ranking the small SUV ahead of more than 4200 models on sale in the UK.

The judges were impressed by the 3008’s all-round ability as a compact yet spacious, rugged yet refined, and driveable yet efficient and environmentally friendly crossover vehicle.

What Car? editor, Steve Fowler, said with its impressive features list, packaging and affordability, the 3008 was a deserved winner.

“The 3008 oozes clever thinking. It is styled in a striking and user-friendly fashion and has all the room inside that a modern family should need. Some of the features are a delight, like the full-length glass roof, the head-up display and the massive cooled storage bin between the front seats.

“Mind you, the rest of the car is pretty clever, too; the rear seats fold flat at the pull of a lever in the boot and the false cargo bay floor means you can get a long or a tall load in. And just as importantly, the 3008 is also comfortable to drive and be driven in, as well as being keenly priced and affordable to run. All of which makes it ultra-desirable and another brilliant Car of the Year,” he said.

Three sets of “Double Cs” have made energy-efficient, low-emissions cars more important in the UK than ever before: climate change, credit crunch and congestion charge.

The list includes two fully-electric vehicles, two petrol-hybrids, one plug-in hybrid and three with direct injection technology.

The site’s managing editor, Dr Ben Lane, said new car customers now have a diverse and ever-expanding range of green vehicles to choose from.

“While it may be confusing for consumers trying to choose a new car, with so many technologies on offer, there’s no doubt that manufacturers are fully engaged with the challenge of designing, and more importantly selling, greener and ultra-green cars,” he said.

Peugeot iOn electric – CO2: 0 g/km

Nissan LEAF electric – CO2: 0 g/km

Toyota Plug-in Prius hybrid – CO2: 59 g/km (expected)

Toyota Auris (Corolla) hybrid – CO2: <99 g/km (expected)

Citroen DS3 HDi – CO2: 99 g/km (expected)

Volvo S60 – CO2: 119 g/km (expected)

Ford C-MAX – CO2: TBA

Honda CR-Z hybrid – CO2: TBA

BMW 5 Series – CO2: TBA

Sharing its body and powertrain with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV and the Peugeot iOn, the C-Zero features the now-familiar permanent magnet synchronous electric motor and litium-ion battery combination.

The system delivers 47kW between 3000 and 6000rpm with an impressive maximum torque of 180Nm available from 0 to 2000rpm. Top speed is 130km/h and 0-100km/h takes bang on 15 seconds.

Other performance numbers from the electric drive system include, umm … zero fuel consumption, zero CO2 emissions and zero engine noise (you can see where the name comes from).

Recharging from a 220-volt socket takes around six hours while the rapid-charge option at 400-volts takes just 30 minutes for an 80 percent “fill”. A full charge will power the C-Zero for up to 128km.

Measuring just 3.48m in length, the C-Zero is suited to tight, congested city driving with a turning circle of nine metres. Comfort is not sacrificed, however, as the roomy interior is equipped with four seats and a 166-litre boot.

Set for launch in Europe in the last quarter of 2010, the Citroën C-Zero is also under consideration for the Australian and New Zealand markets.

Just days after previewing the SR1 concept car and the brand’s new design language, Peugeot has confirmed it will produce a vehicle based on the BB1 electric concept unveiled at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Peugeot says the car will “embody all of the spirit of the BB1” – a fully-electric, 2.5m four-seater designed for the future of inner-city transportation – but has given no specific details on the final configuration of the production vehicle.

As revealed by CarAdvice last September, the unique design of the BB1 concept maximises interior space with its near-vertical windscreen, raised roofline and compact electric drive system.

With two 7.5kW electric motors in the rear wheels maximum power peaks at just 15kW, enough to take the BB1 from 0-60km/h in 6.8 seconds, while the lithium-ion battery packs stored under the rear seats have a range of up to 120km.

Not only is the BB1 emissions-free but it also traps pollutants and ultra-fine dust particles in the atmosphere through the use of high-performance filters and activated carbon, and it also uses solar panels to capture energy and power some of its systems.

Other innovative features include full-LED headlights, wide-opening suicide doors, a tiny turning circle of 3.5m, smartphone connectivity and rear cameras in place of mirrors to improve aerodynamics.

Just how many of these features and functions make it to the final production version of the BB1 (expected by 2015), only time will tell.

Peugeot will unveil its new concept, the SR1 at the Geneva Motor Show in March which will be a glimpse in to the future design of all Peugeots.

To compliment the new design is a new look corporate Lion. The SR1 is designed around the theme of the ‘Grand Touring Car’ and has a high-tech interior.

With a large bonnet, flowing wings and a very low centre of gravity the SR1 revisits the tradition of grand touring cars of the past.

The hard top has been manufactured using pre-formed profile technology, which came from the world of sailing. The car’s skin is made from carbon fibre which is strong and very light.

Able to accommodate three people with the third seat set in the middle behind the two front seats. The centre console slides forward to allow access to the back seat.

Powering the SR1 will be hybrid4 technology which will be first seen on the Peugeot 3008 in 2011. A 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine with 160 kW is combined with a 70 kW electric motor.

The petrol engine is at the front of the car and drives the front wheels and the electric motor is in the back and drives the rear wheels.

It is possible to drive the car in electric mode only, becoming a zero emission vehicle. The combined cycle fuel consumption is 4.9 litres/100 km with 119 g/km of CO2.

With both power trains operating the SR1 develops 230 kW of power and has the benefits of all wheel drive and also has four wheel steering. This combined technology is proof that driving pleasure and environmental friendliness can work together.

A rigid lightweight structure consisting of a one piece body and tubular chassis improve the vehicle’s dynamic efficiency. Suspension consists of double wishbones with drop links at both ends of the vehicle.

The interior is a combination of leather, wood-grain and high tech materials like nickel and satin-finished chrome. The instruments are a combination of analogue and digital readouts with a clear emphasis to every item of information conveyed to the driver.

A long sloping nose and a generous size rear end are rarely features to aspire to, but in the case of the Peugeot 407, it brings a refreshingly different look to the street. The 407 gains full marks for individuality, although I can’t help thinking, does this car make my butt look big?

The Peugeot 407 line-up offers a range of model variants that straddle a large price bracket, starting with the base model 2.0-litre SR HDi which costs around $40,990, through to the 2.7-litre V6 SV HDi Touring which will set you back and extra $25,000. The ST HDi automatic that we’re testing comes in at the lower end of this price spectrum at around $46,190.

The Peugeot’s 2.0-litre diesel produces 100Kw and 320Nm and does a great job of moving this large car that weighs in at around 1732kg. Equally important, the brakes are fast to bring this car to a stand still. The suspension is silky smooth and absorbs all the humps and bumps that even the worst of Melbourne’s roads have to offer. It makes for a composed and quiet ride with excellent road holding. Even the chug of the diesel engine goes seemingly unnoticed in the cabin. There is however a bit of road noise to be heard.

The Peugeot’s steering is light, precise and offers a nice level of feedback that lets you feel adequately involved in the drive experience. Parking sensors are a great help in handling the Peugeot’s large dimensions. A visual and audible warning system protects front, rear and corner panels.

The six-speed automatic transmission on our vehicle performed beautifully. There is a slight delay in uptake when you put your foot to the floor, but we are talking about a large stately car, not a sports car. Once on the move, the engine purrs along nicely and transition through the gears is smooth; put your foot down and the extra power is quick to hand. You’ll find your happy place at just over 2000rpm. Flipping over to the tiptronic gear select was an unexciting experience. There’s little reward for this effort; I was more than happy with performance from the fully automatic transmission.

The look of the 407 may be questionable and is destined to divide opinion, but the package is great, with nice cushy touches like auto folding wing mirrors, a damped glove box hinge and retractable sun shades.

Inside the cabin, the Peugeot 407s beauty is a little more mainstream. Beautiful on the inside? The interior is plush and brings a welcome level of pomp to this car – it feels a bit special. On paper, the choice of three or more different colours and textures sounds like a recipe for disaster, but the Peugeot 407 brings it together very nicely. Leather, plastic, ‘piano black’ shine and splashes of chrome work together on a dash that is constructed with precision layout. Buttons, knobs and dials are dainty and create a very understated, sophisticated display.

The audio system belts out a nice sound, but it lacks modern kit, sporting a mere single CD player as standard. The digital display also has a cheap, down-market look about it.

The optional cream leather in our vehicle, while incredibly impractical, is soft and dreamy to sink into. The seats are lounge-like, perfectly stitched and very comfortable. They look and feel great. Heated seats are included in the leather option. Seat memory would be a welcome addition.

The audio and cruise control are operated via stalks to the left and right of the steering column, which are fiddly and less convenient than your normal forward facing multi-function steering wheel controls.

The cabin ergonomics are great, with good visibility and easy access to the dash and audio interface, for both driver and front passenger. Cabin storage is also good, with door pockets, centre console storage and a large glove box. A single drink holder pops out from the centre console, however some more robust drink holders would be useful.

Instrumentation is large and clear, and includes a multi-function digital display. The large front and side windows create a very bright and airy feel and gives the illusion of a much larger cabin than is the case with the 407. The large side and rear pillars however, leave you with poor rearward visibility.

Second row passengers are graced with equally comfortable seats, but the lack of leg room is a let down. Retractable sun blinds on the rear side windows and rear window are fantastic.

The boot space is great, at 407 litres, and the large opening makes loading big items easy. Split fold seats are also a standard feature, as is a through load flap in the centre.

The 407s safety credentials are impressive and includes eight airbags – front, side, curtain and side rear (ST and SV) only. On the SV model a driver’s knee bag is also fitted. Electronic stability control is standard across the range, as are anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. The 407 gains a five-star rating from ANCAP.

On a city cycle test of the 407s fuel efficiency, it returned an average consumption of around 13 litres per 100/km. The manufacturer’s claim is 10 litres per 100/km for city cycle and 7.1 for a combined route.

The 407 is up against a few heavy hitters in this price bracket, think Honda Accord Euro and Ford Mondeo just to name a couple. The Peugeot does however offer up a very different aesthetic.

The Peugeot 407 is a worthy contender but it has a challenge ahead when it goes up against the competition. Sadly, refreshing different doesn’t always translate into sales.
