The Nissan GT-R has caused a sales storm in every country which it has made its showroom debut – and Australia is no exception.

Since orders opened less than a month ago on October 9, more than 100 examples of the iconic GT-R supercar have been pre-sold as customers rush to secure their own piece of performance bliss.

Priced from just $148,800, the GT-R is exceptional value for money considering the performance benchmarks it has been compared to – and outpaced.

It will be available from just 11 exclusive Nissan High Performance Centres spread across each capital city when it officially goes on sale locally next April.

Nissan Australia has experienced a surge in interest since local pricing and specifications were announced prior to the Australian International Motor Show.

“The early customer reaction is fabulous and we have secured enough production to ensure that no-one who wants an R35 GT-R will be disappointed.”

For those who were perhaps reluctant to wait in line for a new GT-R, Nissan Australia has managed to secure 200 units for 2009 with just over half already accounted for.

First Toyota did it with its abominable TRD Hilux, the vehicle which nearly killed several of our testers. Now, Mitsubishi has taken on the task of livening up its Triton, by handing it over to TMR (Team Mitsubishi Ralliart).

Alan Heaphy’s mob has waved its magic wand over the Triton, and added plastic, leather, plastic, more power and more plastic.

According to Mitsubishi, this concept car “closely represents a production reality”. With the 3.2-litre turbo diesel enhanced, power is up by 12 percent to 132kW, and torque has been boosted (excuse the pun) by 31 percent to a respectable 450Nm.

To help it stick, Koni 8240 series shockies have been fitted to the front and rear. A new front brake package using 4 piston callipers, and 343mm diameter vented and slotted two piece discs with Ferodo pads helps it stop, too.

Inside, the car gets leather seats, TMR stitching and logos, with stainless steel scuff plates, and an upgraded Eclipse stereo, with full IPod control, Bluetooth and USB input.

You can see the car at this week’s Australian International Motor Show is Sydney.

The Maserati Quattroporte redefined the performance luxury sedan when it was launched at the 2003 Frankfurt International Motor Show in 2003 and in 2008 at the Australian International Motor Show Maserati raises, once again, the bar for performance, style and exclusivity with the launch of the new Maserati Quattroporte.

For more than 40 years, from the launch of the first Quattroporte, resplendent in its Frau body, in 1964, through the 1984 ‘presidential’ Quattroporte, so called because its keen following started with the Italian President, Sandro Pertini, each new Quattroporte has set a new standard and so it is with the latest model to wear the Quattroporte name.

The first generation of the present Pininfarina-designed Quattroporte has proven and outstanding success for Maserati, launching the company into one of its most successful period of its legendary history. With more than 15,000 cars sold and 46 awards won internationally, the Quattroporte has brought a new level of commercial success to the company; while on the race track the success of the Maserati MC-12 renewed and augmented Maserati unique motorsport history.

The new Quattroporte range reinforces the model’s exclusive image with a thorough technical and styling upgrade, while performance reaches new peaks with the powerful new 4.7 litre, 317 kW engine for the top version, supplementing the existing 4.2 litre 295 kW to offer a new level of choice.

The Pininfarina design, one of the main factors underlying the Quattroporte’s success, reworks the basic theme of the Quattroporte by incorporating the stylistic features of the GranTurismo. All intended to stress the Quattroporte’s character as a luxury limousine with unbeatable dynamic qualities.

The new range is composed of two models, the Quattroporte with the 4.2 litre engine and the new Quattroporte S with the 4.7 litre power unique. Both feature a comprehensive range of equipment and features, along with a pallet of trim, colours and finishes that allows Maserati owners to choose from a theoretical four million possible combinations.

Theoretical, because it is also possible for owners to select their own trims, colours and finishes producing the ultimate level of exclusivity – a Quattroporte that is as unique as its owner.

“The effect of the Quattroporte on Maserati in Australia and New Zealand is undeniable, with last four years of sales representing record years for Maserati, as each year set a new benchmark for sales,” explains Edward Butler, General Manager of Maserati Australia and New Zealand. “With the arrival of the new Maserati Quattroporte, this growth can only continue, with the new engine choice further broadening the appeal of the Quattroporte into a wider market, while the upgrades to interior, drivetrain and staying to all variants ensure that the Maserati Quattroporte remains the supreme incarnation of the performance luxury sedan.”

Sales of the new Maserati Quattroporte start in Australia and New Zealand with its launch at the 2008 Australian International Motor Show, with deliveries beginning in late 2008.

The Maserati Quattroporte has a recommended retail price of $286,000 in Australia, while in New Zealand it has a price of $278,000. The new 4.7 litre Quattroporte S has an RRP of $323,800 in Australia and in New Zealand it is priced at $308,500.

The eyes of the world turned to Sydney as the stylish and dynamic new-generation Mazda3 sedan was revealed at the Australian International Motor Show.

Mazda presented first official images of the highly-anticipated new Mazda3, ending months of intense media speculation.

The new-generation Mazda3 will redefine small car benchmarks for styling, handling and value for money when it arrives in Australia around the middle of 2009.

The new Mazda3 will inherit the mantles of Australia’s third-best selling passenger car, and a leader in the small car segment that accounts for one-quarter of all new vehicles bought by Australians.

More than 1.5 million first-generation Mazda3s have been sold in more than 100 countries around the world; almost 150,000 in Australia alone since its launch in January 2004. Mazda3 has a class-leading reputation for value for money and driving enthusiasm, and is popular with private buyers.

Mazda Executive Vice President Philip Spender flew to Australia to present first official images of the new-generation Mazda3 sedan at the Sydney motor show.

Embargoes around the world were synchronised with Mr Spender’s presentation. As these first official images were revealed on the video screen at Mazda’s Darling Harbour stand, these very same images were instantly sent to thousands of the world’s automotive media in more than 100 countries across five continents.

“Today is a very important day for new car buyers, both in Australia and around the world,” said Mr. Spender “Today is the world’s first look at the new-generation Mazda3, a compact car that will build further on the Stylish, Insightful and Spirited foundations laid by its predecessor.”

With the first-generation Mazda3, Mazda proved that small cars can be stylish and fun to drive as well as economical and affordable. And Australians voted with their wallets, making the Mazda3 one of the biggest-selling passenger cars in Australia.

This new-generation Mazda3 revealed today will take these core Mazda3 qualities to even greater heights, further cementing Mazda3’s popularity with Australians.

Mr Spender said the new Mazda3 will be presented in the metal at the Los Angeles Auto Show on November 19, 2008.

“We chose Sydney to give the world its first look at the new Mazda3’s striking design. Following that, North America will host the world debut of the Mazda3 sedan in late November. Shortly after that the new-generation Mazda3 five-door hatchback will debut on the European continent. I think it’s only fitting that a car that accounts for one-third of Mazda’s global sales should have a truly global reveal. “

Mr. Spender said the Mazda3, and small cars in general, are increasingly significant in markets around the world.

“The rising cost of fuel is changing the automotive consumer landscape not only in Australia but around the world. That, and the increasingly high cost of living is driving consumers towards smaller, more affordable, more economical vehicles.

“As a result we’re seeing increased levels of equipment, prestige, performance and refinement in small cars, making them even greater value.

“We’ve developed the new-generation Mazda3 to be a small-car leader around the world. The Mazda3’s expressive and emotional styling, heightened driving dynamics, quality and refinement will propel it to even greater heights than the very successful model it replaces.”

Headlining the Kia stand at this year’s Australian International Motor Show is a preview of the new and very stylish Kia Cerato sedan, due for release to the Australian market early in 2009.

New Kia Cerato will be the first Kia released in Australia to feature the ‘new face of Kia’, the H-grille design from the pen of Kia’s global chief design officer, Peter Schreyer, who joined the company in 2006 from the Volkswagen Group.

Schreyer’s corporate H-grille echoes his car design philosophy. According to Schreyer, design is the No.1 purchase influence but it is essential that new designs match both the Kia brand value and the vision of the Kia brand.

The new Cerato is the first mass production Kia that embodies Peter Schreyer’s thinking, and introduces the new Kia ‘face’ that is sporty with an element of aggression.

Eye-catching integrity of design is just one factor in new car buyers’ minds. Customers want quality, safety, reliability, value and low total cost of ownership. That’s where the efficiencies of Kia’s highly-developed production facilities are displayed in the all-new Cerato, building cars in a smarter way with more efficient use of materials.

New Cerato is the perfect choice for people seeking a modern, well-engineered and more efficient car to reduce their ownership costs without compromising quality, safety or reliability.

The new model will bridge the gap between small and medium cars with the space, performance, features and value that many Australian car buyers are seeking, without having to pay more for a medium-sized car with a larger and less economical engine.

Longer and wider than the current Cerato sedan and in fact more roomy than the first generation Toyota Camry sold in Australia, the new Kia Cerato has a longer wheelbase than its predecessor with a more spacious and comfortable interior room for five occupants and a bigger boot.

New Cerato will feature a new, efficient 2-litre engine with Continuously Variable Valve Timing (CVVT) for class-leading power and torque, delivering the pulling power and responsiveness of a 2.2-litre engine without the fuel consumption of a bigger engine.

Like all new Kia vehicles now sold in Australia, the new Cerato will be covered by Kia’s 5-year/unlimited kilometre warranty for private buyers (5-year/130,000kms for fleet buyers).

The final specification and pricing for Australian vehicles is still to be determined but the new Kia Cerato is unquestionably an eye-catching design that will match the space and performance that Australian small car buyers want and an outstanding value-for-money price.

A year after the unveiling of the GranTurismo, Maserati is back at the Australian International Motor Show with yet another coupe premiere, the GranTurismo S, the ultimate expression of Maserati’s performance and the fastest production car ever produced by the Italian legend.

With the GranTurismo S, Maserati shifts the emphasis of its magnificent coupe from grand touring luxury to performance and driving excitement.

The new 323 kW V8 4.7 engine, electro-actuated gearbox with fast MC-Shift, Transaxle layout, sporty exhaust and brakes made with dual-cast technology make the GranTurismo S the new flagship for Maserati sporting flair, with acceleration from 0 to 100 kmh in 4.9 seconds and a maximum speed of 295 kmh, the highest ever reached by a standard production Maserati.

The compact and lightweight 4.7 litre V8 engine develops maximum power output of 323 kW at 7,000 rpm and peak torque of 490 Nm at 4,750 rpm, and ensures high specific power output and more torque at lower speeds as well, without affecting the capacity of the engine to respond very quickly to changing road conditions, typical of racing engines.

The increase in power output and torque has not affected the versatility of the power unit, which continues to be readily harnessed even during everyday use. The power unit sounds deep and throaty, but the exhaust valve pneumatic control can also be activated to make it discrete and comfortable.

An electro-actuated six-speed gearbox is paired with the 4.7 litre V8 engine, and has MC-Shift software which harnesses the new engine’s power output, ensuring gearshift speed and quality that represent a point of reference for the entire sports car range.

The engine and gearbox on the Maserati GranTurismo S are arranged in the Transaxle layout, typical of high-performance sports cars that represent the technological DNA of all Maseratis. The front-mounted engine, and the gearbox, located to the rear, are rigidly connected by a tubular element containing the driveshaft.

This solution gives excellent weight distribution, 47% over the front axle and 53% over the rear axle, which translates into excellent dynamics and top performance.

The i30 CW is based on the i30 hatch but offers greater luggage capacity and a slightly longer wheelbase, contained within attractive new external styling.

The vehicle on display has 17” Alloys with 225/45 R17 tyres, side repeaters in the outside mirrors, USB and AUX and iPod connectivity, 6 speakers including 2 tweeters, steering wheel mounted audio controls, 6 airbags and ESP Stability Control. It is presented in Sleek Silver paintwork with a black leather interior.

The i30 CW achieves a minimum turning radius of 10.42 m as compared to 10.34 m for the i30 hatch

The i30 CW offers drivers versatility of a hatchback with more room for rear passengers and cargo. The i30 CW is well suited to an active lifestyle with plenty of room to fit a full size stroller plus luggage or sports equipment.

The engine line-up for launch will mirror the successful i30 hatch, comprising the 1.6 litre CRDi turbo Diesel and 2.0 litre petrol engines.

Pricing will be made available at the time of launch early next year.

Like the i30 hatch, the i30 CW’s suspension and steering will be tuned for Australian road conditions.

The beautiful Volkswagen Passat CC has made its first local appearance at the Australian International Motor Show this afternoon.

Its fully independent body design, four sporty individually sculpted seats, impressive powertrain systems and technology worthy of the luxury class, meld together to offer a unique choice in its market segment.

The new Volkswagen Coupe embodies the concept of a sporty coupe in a stunning four-door package which does not conform to the mainstream.

Revealing itself as being an exceptionally comfortable and elegant vehicle inside. Small details can have tremendous impact such as the new design of the instruments with chrome bezels; instruments markings and numbers are not backlit in the Volkswagen Blue, rather they glow in a white light.

When the ignition is started the instrument pointers all briefly peg to their maximum positions. For added dynamism, the suspension has been lowered by 15mm but as its name suggests – Comfort Coupe – there is no compromise in ride quality.

The flowing lines of the car’s profile, side and rear, are especially distinctive. The roof sweeps toward the rear with a very flat curve radius, from the A pillars to far beyond the C pillars. The line of the boot region extends into the rear window as if drawn with a single line. The side windows trace a narrow arc bordered in chrome which are made more intense by having the side windows are guided into frameless doors.

Beneath the window line, a muscular, developed shoulder line is used as a style-defining design element, which is emphasized by a distinct ‘tornado line’. In hard numbers, the coupe measures 4,796 mm in length, 1,856 mm wide and is just 1,422 mm high.

The radiator grille with its two cross-struts and centrally located logo spans the area between the trapezoidal headlamps making the front end of the Passat CC more dominant than any other Volkswagen.

The rear end of the Passat CC is also marked by an independent design. Large format dual taillights produce an unmistakable visual image, day and night. A rear spoiler that has been very stylishly worked into the modulation of the boot lid reduces air turbulence and generates greater downforce.

Due for launch in early 2009, the Passat CC will be available with either an efficient TDI diesel producing 125kW and 350Nm of torque or a direct injection 3.6-litre V6 petrol engine which produces 220kW and 350Nm of torque.

The Passat CC will be well equipped with luxurious features designed to cosset the driver and passengers. Four individual sports seats covered in Napa leather with inbuilt seat heaters for both front and rear occupants, 3 spoke leather multi-function steering wheel with gearshift paddles, climate control, brushed aluminium decorative interior trim and 12-way power adjustable front seats are just some of the extensive list of standard equipment.

To ensure optimum safety and control, the Passat CC will also come with Electronic Stabilisation Program, eight airbags, front and rear parking distance sensors and Adaptive Chassis Control. In addition to the extensive array of standard features, the Passat CC will also be available with unique optional features like Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Park Assist.

Full Australian specifications and pricing of the new Passat CC will be released at launch.

Skoda is broadening the appeal of its Octavia line-up even further with the introduction of an exciting new product – Octavia Scout 4X4.

The Scout will see Skoda enter the compact SUV segment and is designed for drivers who demand equal measures of practicality and individuality. The Octavia Scout 4X4 model features all the usual Skoda refinements but adds rugged good looks, high equipment levels and a state-of-the-art four-wheel-drive system allowing owners to go where others fear to tread in some compact crossover SUVs.

The Octavia Scout 4×4 has been developed to offer drivers the best of both worlds. As happy on urban roads as it is in mud, sand or snow, Octavia Scout 4X4 is fitted with an abundance of features which allow it to tackle a wide variety of rough terrain.

The key to its dramatic dynamic flexibility lies in its second-generation Haldex clutch mechanism, which allows power to be transferred between the front and rear wheels as and when it is required.

A further development of acclaimed first-generation Haldex system, the new version reacts even faster to provide increased traction on loose surfaces. The Octavia Scout 4X4 has ground clearance of 180 mm so that it can be used in many different conditions: on road, off road, for commercial purposes and recreation.

The power to the wheels is delivered through a powerful yet economical Volkswagen Group 2.0-litre TDI with diesel particulate filter as standard producing 103 kW/ 320 Nm, linked to a six-speed manual transmission.

As you would expect from a Skoda, the new Octavia Scout comes with a generous range of standard equipment including 17″ Proteus alloy wheels, heated front seats, dual zone air con, ESP, 6 airbags, rear acoustic parking sensors, cruise control, twin chrome exhausts and unique ‘Scout’ touches throughout the cabin.

When you also consider the 580 litres of boot space (1,620 litres with the back seats down), there is no doubt the Scout is a true all-rounder.

Nissan’s Mixim looks like no other small city car. The dramatic swept-back wraparound windscreen is the dominant feature, inspired by a crash helmet’s visor. The flowing roofline finishes at a sharply truncated rear hatch. Large scissor-hinged doors encroach into the roof making access easy.

Behind the F1-style, centrally mounted driver’s seat are two passenger seats, while a further occasional seat is slotted in behind in the spacious luggage area. The driver’s seat can move aside to aid passengers’ entry and exit.

With a potential maximum range of 250km from the two 50kW electric motors. The futuristic laminate Lithium-Ion batteries are quick to recharge; from discharged to fully charged takes between 20 and 40 minutes, or less time than the average lunch-break.

Mixim has a 2530mm wheelbase, and is just 3700mm long, 1800mm wide and 1400mm high. Thus it is shorter and lower than a Nissan Micra, though slightly wider. The lightweight composite body allows a kerb weight of just 950kg.

Inside, the driver grasps a U-shaped steering wheel and there are rear view cameras in place of door mirrors, relaying the view from behind onto screens at each end of tes a virtual representation of the front wheels.

This is linked to real-time movement of the steering wheel to give the driver the impression of being in control of a single-seater racing car. From a steering input point of view that’s not too wide of the mark: Mixim needs just half a turn to go from lock-to-lock.

The U-shaped steering wheel resembles a computer race game controller. As with F1 racers, the wheel incorporates switches for control functions. The Mixim concept was shown for the first time at Frankfurt in 2007 and was designed by Nissan’s Japanese think-tank that’s looking well over the horizon, to cater to the needs of the young drivers of 2020.

These drivers will have been brought up in the age of computers and the internet and will be comfortable with virtual friendships and relationships, according to Nissan’s futurologists. They will not feel as passionate about cars as previous generations; rather to Inoue, the chief designer of Nissan’s exploratory design studio, led a design team with an average age of just 25 to create Mixim, a new merging of the most up-to-date electric vehicle technology in a svelte and distinctive coupé shape.

“We wanted to create an icon for this digital generation… something that went far beyond the stereotypes to which their parents tend to be attracted,” he said.

The ‘Super Motor’ features dual rotors inside and outside, a single stator coil and, as a result, can output power through two shafts at the same time. By controlling the power output of each shaft separately, it is possible to drive right and left wheels independently.

Thanks to the use of compound current, the ‘Super Motor’ offers greater power density than conventional motors. As well as powering pure electric vehicles, the ‘Super Motor’ has application potential for petrol/electric hybrids and fuel cell vehicles.

Unlike a conventional Lithium-Ion battery with its bulky cylindrical cells, Nissan’s Lithium-Ion battery uses thin laminated cells and has fewer components overall. This boosts its power by a factor of 1.5 at the same time as halving its physical size.

The cell construction, in turn, means a thin modular design is possible with a commensurate improvement in battery cooling efficiency. Higher power outputs are also achieved through material improvements made to its lithium manganate positive electrode and carbon negative electrode.

This small yet more powerful battery also provides packaging advantages. Locating the compact cells under the floor of the car not only lowers the centre of gravity, but also permits the development of a low, flat floor with commensurate gains in interior space.

Mazda has staked its claim for top billing at the Australian International Motor Show by displaying its amazing Taiki concept car.

Taiki is one of an acclaimed series of design studies unveiled by Mazda in recent years. It is an exercise in advanced aerodynamics that hints at a future generation of more sustainable sports cars.

It is designed, according to Mazda, to “visually express the flow of air” and takes inspiration from the shape of the traditional flowing robes that enable a celestial maiden to fly in Japanese legend.

The dramatic taper of the rear bodywork and outrigger-style rear wheels combine to reduce the car’s aerodynamic drag co-efficient to just 0.25, thereby improving fuel economy.

In addition, a kick-up of the car’s underside at the rear results in zero aerodynamic lift, improving high-speed stability.

Taiki is powered by Mazda’s next-generation Renisis rotary engine which features a longer stroke and larger displacement of 1600cc (800cc x 2) to raise thermal efficiency and boost torque at all engine speeds.

A new direct injection system and aluminium side housing enhance the rotary engine’s traditional merits of light weight and compact size.

Mazda’s designers say the Taiki’s interior is inspired by traditional Japanese carp-shaped streamers and, like the exterior, is designed to convey the sense of air flow.

Among its innovative features are streams of red light, which flow past either side of the driver to visually depict leaps in engine revs.

The Mazda Taiki joins a solid line-up of cutting edge concepts on display at the motor show, including Toyota’s Hybrid X concept – a vision for future hybrid-powered cars, Nissan’s all-electric powered Mixim concept, and Suzuki’s latest iteration in the Kizashi series.

Suzuki is set to steal the limelight at this year’s Australian International Motor Show when it unveils the latest in its acclaimed Kizashi series of concept cars.

Kizashi 3 previews Suzuki’s plans to enter the hotly contested medium passenger car segment with a high performance sports sedan.

The concept is powered by a 3.6-litre V6 engine featuring plated cylinders – a weight and space-saving technology that evolved from lessons learnt by Suzuki’s MotoGP and World Rally Championship motorsport teams.

The 220 kW VVT engine is teamed with a paddle-shift six-speed automatic gearbox and Advanced i-AWD (All-Wheel Drive) system.

Suzuki says Kizashi – a Japanese word meaning prelude or foretaste – is a clear sign of things to come from the brand.

“This concept represents a new direction for Suzuki in that it takes our expertise with smaller sporty vehicles and translates that into the midsized segment,” said Suzuki Australia General Manager Tony Devers, “We believe Kizashi will break the mould of typical midsized or family vehicles, when it goes into production next year.”

Suzuki grew sales to over 2.3 million motor vehicles world-wide last year and says a new medium segment car is essential to achieve further sales growth.

While a firm timetable is still to be announced, Devers said production of the exciting new mid-sized sedan would begin in late 2009.

“Our engineers are also considering the possibilities of hybrid-powered and state-of-the-art clean diesel versions of the car,” said Devers, “The Concept Kizashi series was developed by Suzuki’s Advanced Design Group to reflect, it says, “the strong, honed physique of a dynamic athlete in motion.”

The bulging bonnet, wide track abbreviated overhangs and aggressive wheel and tyre combinations convey an underlying strength and performance orientated image.

Kizashi is designed to accommodate the diverse lifestyles of customers who want to stay with Suzuki when purchasing larger, midsize cars.

Suzuki Australia today confirmed the all-new Alto would join the Suzuki model line-up next year.

The fifth and smallest member of its acclaimed line-up of world strategic models, the new Alto combines eye-catching style and easy urban mobility with great performance in terms of fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions.

“Alto is the answer for people wanting a quality vehicle offering great performance, high levels of safety and outstanding fuel economy,” said Suzuki Australia General Manager Tony Devers “Alto meets the lifestyle needs of today’s motorists and the pressing global need for environmental compatibility. It will also be one of the most fun-to-drive cars available and a great example of Suzuki’s Way of Life! philosophy”.

Devers said the new Suzuki Alto would put a quality, environmentally friendly car within reach of all customers for the first time.

“Alto will represent the essence of the Suzuki commitment of offering outstanding value for money. Suzuki has long been a pioneer in the automotive industry, and the new Alto is pioneering a new sub-light car for Australia”.

As the second model in the second phase of Suzuki’s world strategy, the new Alto offers high levels of comfort and convenience in a design that combines sporty, European-inspired looks with great aerodynamics.

The new Alto reflects the unparalleled knowledge of small-cars that has made Suzuki so successful with mini-vehicles in Japan and compact cars like the Swift all over the world.

Manufactured in Suzuki’s Manesar plant in India, the Alto was designed by Suzuki engineers and tuned for European customers based on an extensive test drive program.

The new Alto is aimed mainly at urban people who want a small car that offers style and enjoyment together with great environmental credentials.

At the heart of the concept for the new Alto is Suzuki’s belief that people should be able to enjoy economical, eco-friendly motoring without sacrificing style, comfort, practicality, or performance.

Compact dimensions (the new Alto is the smallest of Suzuki’s world strategic models) play a large part in realizing outstanding environmental credentials by keeping weight to a minimum, but without detracting from user-friendliness.

The new Alto has a sporty, solid look that exudes urban energy despite the body’s compact dimensions. The design is elegant thanks to aerodynamically efficient contours that combine tautness with evocative curviness.

Designed for the global market, a low drag coefficient of just 0.30 promotes outstanding fuel efficiency and low CO2 emissions.

The cabin layout apportions most of the space to the front seats but still provides ample space for four adults with numerous handy storage spaces for small items located throughout the cabin.

Notwithstanding the new Alto’s compact exterior dimensions, there’s a usable amount of luggage space behind the rear seats, and folding down the rear seatback expands the space into a roomy luggage area suited to daily use.

The new Alto has an overall length of 3,500mm, width of 1,600mm, height of 1,470mm and a wheelbase of 2,360mm and is powered by a three cylinder 1.0-litre petrol engine producing peak power output of 50kW with a maximum torque of 90Nm.

The Euro IV-compliant engine delivers fuel consumption of just 4.5L/100km and produces only 103g/km of CO2 emissions. Standard transmission is five-speed manual, while a four-speed automatic transmission will be available as an option.

Front suspension is of MacPherson strut type and the large, high-rigidity suspension frame is complemented by further strengthening in the strut mounting areas for superior handling. The rear suspension has Suzuki’s proprietary 3-link rigid axle design, and incorporates numerous refinements for the new car. The coil springs and dampers were tuned for optimum handling stability through extensive testing on roads in Europe.

Suzuki targeted handling that makes driving enjoyable on urban roads, so drivers enjoy linear response, gentle roll movements, light steering feel, and good absorption of shock and vibration.

The new Alto has a minimum turning radius of just 4.5m making it easy to manoeuvre and park in tight spaces.

To help the driver avoid hazards on the road, the new Alto will be available with Electronic Stability Program, which modulates the engine performance and applies the brakes during cornering and under acceleration.

In the unfortunate event of an accident, the new Alto’s body reflects Suzuki’s Total Effective Control Technology (TECT) concept in the form of crushable structures that absorb impact energy, frame members that disperse impact energy away from occupants and a strong cabin structure.

Use of high-tensile steel for major body parts means the resulting high level of occupant safety does not add excessive weight to the body.

SRS front, side, and curtain airbags are available to reduce the severity of impacts suffered by occupants in the event of a collision. Energy-absorbing trim materials provide further head protection.

Devers said the Australian version of Alto would go on sale in the second quarter of 2009. Pricing and final specification will be released closer to launch.

Elfin Sports Cars has officially unveiled the next phase in its already impressive range of sports cars at the 2008 Australian International Motor Show in Sydney, Australia with the debut of a new four cylinder Showcar.

To be known as the ‘Type 5’ Clubman, the all new Elfin promises to deliver exciting levels of performance at an unprecedented price for enthusiasts and track specialists alike.

Under the guidance of the Tom Walkinshaw Group, Elfin Sports Cars has undergone a significant transformation since the business was acquired over 18 months ago.

Sketched by designers Julian Quincey and Adam Dean Smith, the Type 5 Clubman takes inspiration from the heritage of Elfin Sports Cars of the past, such as the Elfin C3, as well as looking to the future with a product capable of success in Australia and in international markets.

“The new addition to the Elfin range is a proud moment for the company and the Australian car industry this year” said Elfin Sports Cars General Manager John Clark. “Our experience in this market has shown that enthusiasts want more involvement and accessibility to spirited track and road motoring, desires we have delivered on with the Type 5” Clark added. “We have bought this Showcar to Sydney on the basis that the final product will be designed 50% for road driving and 50% for track work.”

The car has been in development for 18 months and is powered by a two litre Ecotec Turbo engine, which it shares with the Pontiac GXP Solstice.

Following the vehicles launch at the Australian International Motor Show drive activities for the media will be conducted, with details on a customer launch to be confirmed shortly.
