Land Rover 60th anniversary - cross Australia journey

Land Rover crosses Australia for its 60th Anniversary.

The 1948 creation of the Land Rover Series 1 came to fruition courtesy of Maurice Wilks, who was the head designer at Rover during the late ‘40’s. Throughout the company’s 60 year history, there have been a raft of ownership changes, ranging from Rover, BMW, more recently Ford and now Tata.

Despite the sale of Land Rover to Indian industrial giant Tata, Land Rover says it is still committed to continuing the trend of capable, versatile and stylish vehicles. The sale of Land Rover to Tata is not expected to hinder the continued growth of the British marque.

Land Rover 60th Anniversary

Land Rover’s break into the Australian market occurred during the late 1940s and early 1950s. Around 800 Land Rovers were commissioned as the vehicles of choice by the committee responsible for the Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric scheme.

Fast-forward 60 years and it’s party time. Land Rover has decided to celebrate by travelling from Birdsville in south -west Queensland, through to Broome in north Western Australia. Unlike the other manufacturer who has undertaken this journey, Land Rover will cross the country using every model in its range.

Freelander 2, Defender, Discovery 3, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover Vogue will all play a part in this epic journey.

CarAdvice is helping celebrate Land Rover’s 60th Anniversary by participating in a trek across Australia – from Birdsville (Queensland) to Broome (Western Australia) to be precise.

I took the task of covering the first leg – from Birdsville to Alice Springs, crossing the Simpson Desert along the way.

The Supercar Club - the coolest club in Australia

The Supercar Club - the coolest club in Australia

- Paul Maric

Okay, so I was a member of a chess club when I was younger. No big deal, I just made sure I didn’t tell anybody about it - especially girls. This club on the other hand is one that all members aren’t afraid of boasting about.

The title says it all – the Supercar Club.

For those of us who don’t find the idea of owning and experiencing the depreciation of a supercar, there is hope at hand.

After having received a minor facelift in 2007, the Range Rover Sport is apparently given yet another makeover as these shots, taken at the Nürburgring, prove.

Disco fever has hit and I thought I’d join the party by road testing Land Rover’s Discovery 3 TDV6 SE. I spend a lot of time on the road and see plenty of Discovery 3s (or D3s as they’re also known) and I’ve always wondered why. After spending a week with Land Rover’s popular model, it became quite clear why it’s such a popular vehicle with the punters.

Jaguar sales increase

If you thought Indian manufacturer Tata Motors’ takeover of Jaguar was going to hurt the British brand, you thought wrong. For the first time in two years, Jaguar has seen a monthly sales increase.

Sales increased by nearly 69.6 percent across Europe last month, totalling to 4,047 cars from the 2,386 it sold in April 2007. In the UK last month saw an 85 percent increase. Australian sales figures should see similar results this month.

Geoff Polites - Aussie boss of Jaguar LandRover dies

Geoff Polites

Geoff Polites, chief executive officer of Jaguar Land Rover, has died peacefully in Australia at the age of 60.

*UPDATE*

The current Presient of Ford Australia, Bill Osborne, said:

“Geoff was home in Australia for the birth of his first grandchild and unfortunately became critically ill while here. He passed away with his wife and family by his side.”

Despite battling ill health for the past two years, Geoff never lost sight of his goal to return Jaguar Land Rover to profitability. He exhibited similar strength of leadership and determination during his time as President of Ford Australia – qualities which resulted in the successful introduction of the BA Falcon in 2002 and the Ford Territory in 2004.

“Despite having moved onto other roles within Ford Motor Company, Geoff continued to believe passionately in the products and the team at Ford Australia. His energy, enthusiasm and support for our business will be sorely missed.”

Mr Osborne said that for those who knew him well, he would be missed as a great friend, keen Swans supporter and dedicated family man.

Mr Polites, a former car dealer, was President of Ford Australia, and credited with reviving the company’s fortunes in Austalia, before heading overseas to a number of very senior posts with the Ford Motor Company, including heading up its European operations.

Mr. Polites, credited with leading the team that returned the Jaguar Land Rover business back to profitability and successfully steering it through its ongoing sale process to Tata Motors, had been battling serious illness for the past two years.
