Holden to cut 25 additional production days

In another blow to the Australian automotive industry, GM Holden has announced plans to cut production by an additional 25 days, spread across the first three months of 2009. The closures will occur at the company’s Elizabeth plant in Adelaide.

Holden’s seven millionth vehicle milestone

Adelaide has already seen the closure of Mitsubishi’s local production this year, while Holden’s 3,400 workers in South Australia are not new to non-production days, having already had several days off in recent weeks, the news is not promising.

A little while ago, CarAdvice’s Matt Brogan took the Calais Sportwagon for a spin. He was impressed with the room and looks, but the drivetrain left him a little wanting.

With that in mind, I headed off to Holden to pick up the Berlina Sportwagon. It’s one rung down the ladder from the Calais, so surely this is going to be torture, isn’t it?

This follows confirmation that the Government would reduce car tariffs to 5 percent in 2010 under a new 10-year plan for the industry, with many critics labelling the bailout as compensation merely aimed at delaying the inevitable.

Holden Barina achieves four-star ANCAP rating

In what is a far cry from the original TK Barina’s woeful two-star rating, Holden today acknowledged ANCAP’s confirmation of a four-star crash rating for the upgraded 2009 model year (or TK9) Barina three-door hatchback.

The result reflects structural improvements and the addition of side impact airbags as standard across the updated Barina hatchback range (result does not apply to sedan models), which was introduced in August

So, the family needs a bit of urge. What do you buy? You could go out and buy another SUV, use it on the blacktop and never let its transmission work out what off-roading feels like.

I feel for those poor Haldex-style systems. Waiting to be used, and never realising their full potential. Rather than waste fuel lugging around pieces of the car which don’t ever get worked, why not dispense with the madness and just buy a stationwagon.

By combining GM’s two latest performance offerings, the Pontiac G8 GXP and the LSX454 crate engine from GM Performance Parts, the G8 GXP Street concept blitzes the W427 and outpaces the Corvette ZR1 for power.

Economy improves for Commodore

The Alloytec V6 engine powering Holden’s Commodore Omega and Berlina models has received an upgrade this month that sees fuel savings of up to 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres for petrol models and an impressive 1.3 litres per 100 kilometres for dual-fuel variants.

Emissions have therefore also decreased assisting the petrol variants listed to achieve the highest Green Vehicle Guide noxious emissions score possible being 8.5 points out of 10 (excludes hybrid electric vehicles). The emission levels meet Euro VI certification, a standard which does not come into effect in Europe until 2014.

Skaife announces retirement

Whether you stand on the blue or the red side of the line, there is no argument that Mark Skaife is one of the true legends of the V8 Supercar track and today he will call an end to his illustrious career. After more than 20 years in the racing suit Skaife will today announce at a Melbourne press conference that this will be his last season behind the wheel of his HRT Commodore.

After recording some disappointing results this season, the five-time Bathurst champion has been fighting off speculation of a retirement for a good part of the year. His official announcement of hanging up the boots may see young gun Will Davison make the trek over from Ford to fill the Skaife void next season but Davidson hasn’t confirmed anything yet. Retirement talk stepped up after Skaife crashed out of contention at his favourite circuit, Bathurst, and later admitted driver fault.
